Rookie mistake on rear brake replacement

Get ready to laugh at me lol. Earlier last week I heard this annoying squealing sound coming from what I thought were the rear brakes. I heard it when I was backing up and while taking off.

this weekend I decided to replace the rear rotors and pads. The pads were fine but oh well. First of all, that ridiculous piston design on the rear that requires a tool was annoying. I didnt know that you have to line the notches up a certain way for the pads. I didn't do that. I just pushed them back in.

second thing. After I got the rear done and put the tires back on, the noise is apparently the front brakes 😂😂😑😑. I feel dumb. I have an appointment with my local reputable mechanic this week to look at the noise. I'll probably mention my rookie brake job and have him fix the piston notches lol. Smh

hope you went back and aligned the notches on the pads, if not the burning smell will remind you soon ;-)

(ask me know I know about that burning smell . . . )

new pads never hurt, hopefully the old rears were at least a bit worn

Um...
I didn't do that. I just pushed them back in.
So... unless you did the screwing in as needed, you've likely broken those calipers. That screwing in function is to reset the piston, true, but also it's part of the parking brake mechanism. I'll be impressed if somehow everything is still working back there, to be honest, because if you did manage to just push them in... something had to break. I suspect you're gonna need new rear calipers, and your mechanic is going to be somewhat amused at the extra bit of money he's gonna get for that...

I can tell you without reservations that I would absolutely not be driving the car with that knowledge. I'm not sure how those calipers are going to respond, nor what else might happen.
Get ready to laugh at me lol.
Not gonna laugh. I'm a little sad, dude. But maybe I read that all wrong...

/But hey, bright side, *new rear calipers* and who doesn't love that kind of thing?

Ok, good. Whew. I was a might concerned as you can tell...

Now I'm tryin' to figure out how you got the pinned rear pads in there and it not mess up things... Unless you got a hold of unpinned rear pads, in which case, those'll have to be swapped out because without the pin to keep the piston from rotating, your rear calipers are either going to not work right or there's not gonna be a parking brake adjustment happening. Although to all that, the mechanic'll figure it out I'm sure.

We all have to learn somewhere.
Watch YouTube videos how to do it. Don't give up. Working on your own car and fixing it is a satisfying feeling.

when you smell the rear pads burning up because they are dragging, that will be your cue that you need to go back in and line up those buttons/notches

Thanks everyone! I was able to take the rear wheels off and line up the notches just fine and all went well. I'm still taking it to the mechanic this week to find out why the front brakes are squeaking when taking off.

Front brakes are easier than the rears. Save yourself the 100 bucks in labor and do them yourself. You don't have to screw the front calipers. I used needle nose pliers to screw my rear calipers in because I didnt have the tool. Worked out alright

Yep...I recently helped a friend replace her front brakes on her 2010 V-6 Mustang. Easy job and she can probably do it herself next time.. And it's even easier on a Brembo car.

Front brakes, pretty much every car:

And if you cruise his channel, you'll see *plenty* of front brake jobs. It's sorta like a zen/meditation/ASMR(sp?) thing. I'll just watch him to listen to his commentary, and see if there's any new gotchas. CHEVROLET, Hondoos, Fords... Front brakes are front brakes. But Eric's good stuff.

I love it when my Daughter offers to help people change their brakes. She always adds for half price. LOL
