Remember When

Oh yeah. The "Remember When" thing. I remember the crash, and the longest wait of my life. It was horrid, and I hope it never happens again. Thanks to all who run this place as well as it does. And thanks Brad for having it in the first place.

uh oh, houtex. he said he bought a new phone. he did NOT say that he changed anything to his system. I doubt that he needs to adjust tcp packet sizes. he should rather try to switch off the phone (i.e. take batteries out of the handset and plug the power jack out of the base) and try again, if that doesn't work - call the ISP and give them a good run for their money

Ah yes, I remember....
I remember hearing about the first rumors about the 05 in 2K or so...seeing the drawings in Motor Trend and thinking about how sweet the car looked (even though the drawings were only about 50% right)
I found TMS shortly after it came up from the 'Crash' apparently, and I lurked around awhile, until the May order dates came along... and now you're all stuck with me
And Dan, try another surf program besides IE...like netscape, safari, etc,...

Well, (and not to be contrary, just sayin'.) unless I read "Rogers Cable Internet" wrong, he's using a cable modem, and I'm thinking I got it somewhere that he's plugged directly into that from the computer. Unless he's plugged into the house phone wiring some way, I don't think the phone would matter. Haven't heard of a new wireless phone causing a computer to not be able to cruise the Internet, via a network cabled cable modem connection, but hey, first times for anythings.
And he did say he changed something. But I think that was after the problem started.
BTW, a person doesn't have to do anything active to have the system change behind their backs. A power outage at just the right time, or a borderline NIC card that finally give out, these things happen just because, not because the person decides to get a phone. It's been known by me to happen, mainly because I wind up fixing them.
The NIC card I know of because just recently I tried to install one in a 98 machine and it was very slow on networking. Worked, but badly. Replaced it, tada, all fixed, the NIC was bad outta the box. I still say that's what it is.
Cover all bases, cover my hiney, that's what I try to do when posting computer fixes. I would say hiney, but the gosh darned filter is a piece of poo that stinks. And further, we all know that 'stinks' should read 'siphons greatly.'

Houtex, man, thanks for your post. I really appreciate the effort you went to. I will definately try all of those things this weekend.
As far as the network card, that isn't the problem. I have a network with 4 computers and all are experiencing the same thing.
My network node only has 28 people on it so it is very small.
Anyways, I'll let you know how it goes.
Your suggestions seem to cover all the basis. I'm looking forward to troubleshooting.
Thanks again!
Dan
P.S. Thanks everyone else for your suggestions/comments as well.

dan, try to power off phone handset and base anyway. it might be that, interfering with the cable modem that might be sensitive to 2,4GHz. is that a DECT/GAP-standard phone?

When I go to this site, I can download relatively quickly, but when I try to reply to posts etc... it doesn't work.... or I have to click reply a few times and delete the extra posts.
I'm going to try more things this weekend and let you guys know.
Thanks.

I've got it. You're user number 13 here, Dan. That just has to be it.
You're welcome, hope something in there does that for ya. Oh, and the new info you just gave me says that there's the possibilty of a switch in this mix? Gotta 'nuther one to try, or are you now directly plugged into the cable modem with only the one computer?
Just checkin' in on that. Well, that and the 13 thing. Laters.

Actually, I'm using a router. Anyways, before I waist any more of your time in speculation, let me try a few things and get back to you guys!

so when did this site start. I'm guessing this fatal crash was in January.

The crash was in December, wasn't it? I remember I checked every day for a few weeks straight to see if it was back up, and once I stopped, it came back. So, that's why I didn't reregister until 1/31.
