Today in traffic I mindlessly reached back and started playing with the butt cushion of the rear seat. Much to my suprise, it lifted up in my hand with very little effort. Is this normal? How are the rear seats secured? Do they "just sit" there?

There are clips to stop them from moving forward I believe, but mine just lifts up too. I never thought of it as a problem. As the Focus we have does the same thing.

The '94 Taurus I have has the same type of clips but you gotta push down VERY hard first to unclip it.

I just went out to the garage to check mine... they seemed attached pretty good. I was there when they installed mine.
Here are some pics... I think they are retained with clips along the front... maybe they didn't secure yours?

Yes
I was able to pull some strings. I watched it from start to finish. It was an awesome experience.
