Popping from Springs/Struts
#22
Bryan, is your car quiet after the spring adjustment, or are you still experiencing the popping noise?
Do the 05's have a bearing in the top of the strut brace, like the aftermarket ones for the SN95's?

No, they fixed it but it came right back
. Steeda is making a new spring to be shipped out to replace the front set. There is a design flaw in teh current set, beucase Ford has a design flaw, in their strut system. The bearings are the pieces making the noise. Now, Steeda says that there is NO permnamant damage from the noise, but that remains to be seen. I should have a new set in about a week.
I will know then.

I had this exact problem in my 02 coup. The sounds are the same and occur during the steering of the car. I had it fixed last July. What mistifies me is that with cold mornings, the sound does not happen right away with the 05. By the time I'm pulling into my workplace parking lot the sound is back and it lasts all day.

Thanks Bryan. Is this popping from a spherical bearing in the top of the strut mounting brace? I'm trying to figure out where the bearing is. If it is, then I have heard people complaining of popping noises after installing adjustable aftermarket caster camber plates on SN95s that use a bearing. The stock SN95 system only has rubber isolaters for the front shock/strut and doesn't have this problem. Of course now the S197 uses a true strut arrangemnt, which could have design issues.

Thanks! I just wonder what Ford's fix for this will be. I'm sure the shop that worked on your car is experienced with installing the aftermarket plates and has heard the noise before.

I'm just trying to figure out the relationship between the possible flaw in the springs and the bearing noise. I can't see how redesigining the springs will prevent the bearing noise, unless there is something causing extra load on the bearing or a shifting in the strut assembly. If so, this will be a big problem for those using stock springs that have the bearing noise. I can't see Ford redesigning their springs. That would be a pain to get fixed and a long time coming.
Did Steeda say what the design flaw is and what it causing?

Yes, from what I can remember it is the angle of the top of the spring and how it rests within the system. Since the top f the spring is not at the correct angle, it but extra pressure on specific points, rather than an even load on the entire bearing.
There is also something to do with the twist itself, but I dont remember that as well.

Thanks! Please keep us posted when you get the new springs installed. I know you are anxiously awaiting their arrival. I hate suspension noises in cars, and I'm sure this is aggrevating, especially on a new car.

My car goes in tomorrow to have the windshield replaced. I will mention it to the service manager.
