Passenger side leak - How to dry?
Passenger side leak - How to dry?
I had a leak awhile back caused by a clogged drain on the passenger side. The SJB must have gotten wet because my headlights were randomly turning on (and not turning off.) I dried everything out as best I could (without pulling up the carpet) and disconnected the battery overnight. Next day, everything was back to normal. However, just last night, my headlights have started to randomly come on for about 30 seconds. I pulled up the carpet this time and found it soaked underneath! There's also a moldy smell. What's the best way to dry everything? Also, can someone provide a link on how to remove the SJB? I did a search but couldn't find anything.
Is the drain clogged on the evaporator of the air conditioner?? If it is, most mechanics blow out the drain with air. As to drying out the inside of the car, do what I do take the top down and drive. Seriously, can you fit a dehumidifier in the car?? Hope this helps. I have no idea what a SJB is to be honest. To me it means, St. John the Baptist.
I literally put a dehumidifier on my folded down back seats, ran the cord out the windows that were open about a inch- car was hot as hell inside the next morning, but dry...suggest pulling the trunk carpet/spare too- mine had condensation all thru the car from the wet front floor.
theres more pics in another thread here of other leak sources- mine was first the cowl plugs(twice) then a yr later the black window molding seals, then 2 yrs later the cowl cover inserts- might suggest doing them all when you get time
If you pop the sill plates off- they are taped and snap into place- pop right off pretty easy, then pull the kick panels off(once door sills are off, pull kinda rearward they pop off) the carpet can be folded back. theres 5/8-3/4" jute padding glued to the carpet, from past drying attempts, it wont dry in the car...just tore mine off the carpet carefully, hung on a coathanger in front of a fan, they dried overnight... they are fitted pretty nice, wll lay right back in without being glued... anyways, after pulling the padding out, I propped the carpet up and let the dehumidifier run overnight, dry as a bone the next day.
note the drivers side also has a solid plastic sheet under the carpet, it has to be lifted or it wont EVER dry out... almost like they wanted these cowls to leak and rot the floors out. check the floor for any corrosion, mines been fine, but coulda been just dumb luck... heck one time had 1/2" of standing water on the passenger side.

And if you are also enjoying an unpleasant odor directly linked to using heat or AC, you may have an evap core failure. I just went through that. My wife said it "smelled like giraffe".
The most common issue that gets the SJB wet and creates electrical gremlins is a clogged drain in the passenger side cowl where the cabin filter is located.

Thanks guys. It's a real shame how much these cars leak! Being on Vancouver Island, it's very damp and rains a lot. My GT is my DD and I don't have a garage to store it in which makes things worse
I've set up a dehumidifier along with a heater. Lifted the carpets as much I could. There seems to be a ton of water underneath the passenger seat though! I think I may have to remove the seat to get at it... is it simple to remove?

I'm just concerned about throwing a code with the air bag. Looking it up online, it sounds like that could happen. Should I disconnect the battery? It's also a power seat. Is there anything extra I have to do with that?

It isn't drying much under the seat though. Does anyone have any experience with removing front seats?
