Don't want door dings, yadda, yadda, yadda.
What is your thought of carrying orange parking cones in the trunk and placing them in the spaces on either side of me in far end of the parking lot?
Will this cause too much attention?
Is this illegal?

Might be a bit suspicious. Dont know of the legality of it. I think most of us just end up parking in the middle of nowhere and leave it at that. Drives the girlfriend crazy, but for two years running i have parked in the most distant spots i can find. Be warned though. Parking with no one around does make the car an easy target for runaway shopping carts. Came out of the store one day to see one narrowly miss my baby.

It's not illegal since you're parking on private property. Cones seem to be a popular target of vandals though. I wouldn't be surprised if you don't come out to find them arranged across the top of your car!

Taking up more than one space no matter how you do it is just an invitation for someone to key your car. Mustangs are enough of target for vandalism without giving the jerks some type of justification for their actions (at least in their minds). Do what 05retro said, park in the most remote spot you can find.

+2 Yep, just park in the middle of nowhere. Good excercise as well, and you never have to drive around looking for a spot.

I try to park next to unmovable objects as well. IE curbs, planters, etc.

I don't think an owner of a Ferrari is justified in taking up two spots, so definately not a Mustang.

Don't get me wrong, I love my car and do what I can to avoid dings, but 2 spots is just plain wrong.

I try to do what korinwoodo said, park next to immovable objects.

An owner of a E-series or F-series, IMHO, is justified in taking 2 spots. The larger 250+ trims are wide enough that the doors will slam into smaller cars parked next to it. HMMWVs are also included in my category of vehicles justified in taking 2 parking spots. This is especially true when the designers of the parking lots think of Civics as the definition of a car.

We all seem to have the same fear for our Mustangs...Parking, servicing dust, wet roads etc, etc, etc...Just like we had a new baby in the family...I am the same way, I park by solid objects or where ther is an empty space far away...

I agree that cones would be an invitation for a jerk to do something nasty. Even parking a mile away from everyone else seems to be an invitation. I did that at a mall with a brand new car back in the 70s and came out to find a beater parked next to it and, yes, a big ding.

Luckily, I can park my 06 GT in a secured garage at work where I know the two people who park on either side of it and they know what this car means to me.

If I must leave it in a lot for a while, I always try to find a space with an "island" on one side, preferably the right side because there may be a little better chance that the person parking next to it won't have a passenger opening their door.

I also look for spaces next to really nice cars where the owner might be jsut as **** as me, or next to mini-vans with sliding doors.

So far, I've been blessed, although the first hour I drove my GT after buying it, a big gravel truck pulled onto the freeway in front of me, spraying part of his load. Thankfully, no damage was done.

+1 to those that think cones will buy you trouble...

I'd be angry seeing someone take up THREE spots for their car, any car. I would not be angry to the point of vandalism, but I can imagine someone less benevolent seeing you trot out the cones... and their reaction to your helpless car...
