Painted stock Axelbacks?

I would like to paint my stock AB's because I am going to run them with a OR/H. Anyone do this, have any pics? Any advice would be great for folks keeping there stockers because they look like crap, lol.

What paint should be used?

I want to make my stockers look like flowmasters then get chrome tips added and be all set!

I did this on my DD and used high temp paint (engine paint) from your local auto parts store. BBQ Grill paint would do the trick too- Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I don't know if it would hold up as well though.

Sorry bro, nothing to show. Like I said, this was on my DD, a 91 Integra so I wasn't concerned about doing the most perfect job. I just laid underneath the car w/ a rattle-can of paint and sprayed the mufflers and some of the exhaust pipe. Definitely NOT the way I'd do it on the Mustang. I mainly did it to prevent some rust- the car's 17 years old.

That would indeed work...... I think another forum member has done this, but I can't remember who. Maybe try searching the exterior mods forum, it may be there somewhere.

Never heard of this being done before. If you could, I would like to see the finished product.

Hope it all works out.

I sprayed my stock a/b with black Krylon Rust Tough a while back becuase I'm not a fan of the muffs at the bumper like they are. So I wanted them to "blend/hide" a little more. Turned out great and the finish is still perfect. I just taped off the tips and sprayed with 2 coats. I plan to weld some 4" tips on soon.

I will post a pic when I get home from work.

If you want the paint to stick I would either sand blast the muffler or the very least buy a large wire brush and brush them real good. Otherwise your high temp paint is going to flake off

A few pic's... Just FYI, I Brillo padded mine to clean them up a bit. Let them air dry and just sprayed them a couple times. Took me about an hour. That was almost 6 months ago and they still look the same as the day I did it. Tips should be on in a few weeks (4" rolled & angled).

I painted my Ford racing GTA's before I put them on.Cleaned the grease off with Dawn , acetone on a rag to make sure, fine steel wool then used Krylon high temp flat black. When I had my 4.10 gears put in the guys at the shop were stumped as to what muffs I had.I have a 08 GT/CS and all you see is the big ole 4" polished tips.

I just painted mine with a silver Krylon paint.... about 2 years ago, no prep, no high temp, just a rattle can I had in the garage... Still looks better than the stock ones.

Here's my before and after post (V-6 unpainted, to GT takeoff painted with Blake Flame Proof Header paint) No problems to date!! This was done almost 2 years ago and they still look like I just did them.

I painted my Mac mufflers, here are some pics. I used high temp gloss paint, but i have had to repaint them twice in a year.

I did paint mine on my 06 and the paint held up fine, but not being glossy, they really get dirty and start looking bad. I agree with above, you would need to repaint once in awhile to stay looking good.
I now have SS Granatelli's on my 08.

Thanks for the pics; looks great - better than stock. They almost disappear but the tips pop. I am having trouble finding nice tips for my stockers. I would like a clamp on that has a 4" diamater with a nice rolled tip, any ideas?

I have searched high and low, with no luck, on these forums for the inlet diamater for a tip that goes over the stock tip. I also measured mine and I still can't tell if 3" inlet is the way to go. Any advice here would be great because I am leaning towards a 3" inlet tip to HOPEFULLY slide over the stock tip then clamp on.

I'm getting mine from here... kind of pricey but a perfect fit. The stock tips are 3".

Maybe check the Pypes tips to see if they're the right size?
