Are you reusing the oil that has 2500 miles on it? If so that is a total waste of money and if you are adding a new quart you are still wasting money. You said you were cheap so I would give you my opinion.

Yup. Filtering oil that is not quite used up might not be optimal but it helps a little, I suppose. When you change oil there is some left in the motor so oil is never really clean. I little extra filtration can't hurt. I could spend $3 on far worse things.

The interesting thing is that as a filter gets used, it actually filters better and better. By replacing the filter at 2,500 miles you are actually getting less filtration than just leaving it on there for the full 5K miles.

OK. Never thought of it that way. Some habits die hard. An old engine builder told me years ago that a new filter is cheap insurance.

Will...resist...hanging...those stupid pine air polluters on my mirror every 2500 mi instead.

Here's an independent test by a guy ( Bob the Oil Guy, who now has a large website ) who cut open over 20 different filters and the Motorcraft filters came out on top. The FRPP FL-820S was top dog.

Now this test was done over 3 years ago IIRC and things can change but I'll be buying Motorcraft the rest of my life unless somebody does a new test to convince me otherwise

I used a Mobil 1 because it was free with the purchase of 5 quarts of Mobil 1 oil at Advance. I would have used the Motorcraft if it weren't for the special.

Used to use Mobil One oil and filter (I'm a sucker for the systems approach) but since I haven't run into 5W50 anywhere convient, I use Motorcraft oil and filter now.

IMO, 3000 mile oil change intervals is too frequent. The manual recommends 7500 interval. I've decided to change my oil every 5000 miles, and use Mobil1 synthetic oil and Mobil1 filters. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects us against requirements to use only Ford-approved Motorcraft oil and filters. As long as the oil and filters meet industry quality standards, use of third party products won't void a warranty.

edit: my opinion about oil change interval is based on my own driving style. I can understand why some drivers would change their oil more frequently based on how they drive their cars.

Don't really get on her that often, it's just been cheap insurance and piece of mind for me. Sense I bought my truck, I've been hitting the 6 month mark long before I hit the 2500-3000 mile mark.

I found out about this too, though I don't have known engine damage at this point. But I DO have the one Pennzoil filter I used, so they are going to have to prove that filter was the problem, in which case I'll be going after Pennzoil.
