In need of advice, is a heat exchanger worth it?
Hey guys, just picked up my California Special a few weeks ago and looking to do a few modifications. Bought the car with a m90 Roush Charger and I've been reading soo much about heat soaking. I live in Florida where its either too hot or hot at all times so I'm wondering if the heat soaking would especially apply to my car. Im not looking by any means to have a extremely fast car or I would ditch the m90, I just want to make sure I'm getting the most I can out of my setup which is sufficient for me. Btw I do plan on doing the smaller pulley, tune and gears which should all be done around May sometime, with this thread I just wanted everyones opinions on if a heat exchanger is worth the $1,000 its going to cost in the end. I was looking at this one in particular http://www.vmpperformance.com/VMP-Du...vmphe-dual.htm.

You are definitely in the risk for heat soak, it just comes with the territory with supercharged applications. Without a proper heat exchanger your intake temps will be through the roof in the Florida heat and your power will be way down. The higher the intake temp, the lower the power.
Personally I would contact Department of Boost and see what they recommend for your setup. It doesnt look like thier website has been updated in a while, but he is an active member on here.

heat soak on a blown motor is so bad, I went to a liquid-cooled blower in addition to the heat exchanger already on the car. It will absolutely kill your HP and once it's soaked, it'll take a good hour before you can get any more power out of it. I live in Texas, there's no such thing as too much cooling on a blown motor.

Definitely going for it. After more research I haven't found a single person to say anything less then good reviews from doing it and I feel its necessary in the Florida humidity and heat.

Wait -- your car already has a heat exhanger, right? Meaning the extra radiator mounted low in the front?
Upgrading it might help . . . or maybe not . . . as I understand it, the weak points in the M90 are:
- the intercooler -- this is inside the manifold, and will not be changed with a heat exchanger upgrade
- the M90 supercharger itself -- it is a bit undersized for our engines, so you have to spin it fairly fast to make decent boost, and that causes it to run hot
I think you do NOT want to go to a smaller pulley to spin it faster; that will just make the heat problem worse.
And yes talk to Jason at Department of Boost, he knows these blowers better than anyone, especially in the area of heat issues, and he will give you the straight scoop.

I agree, going to a smaller pulley may not be the wisest decision. Every blower has an efficiency range and when you get out of that you may not see any gains due to loss in efficiency. But with that said, heat is the enemy. Any way to reduce heat is a plus.
If you want more power I might look at a different/bigger blower.

If you can get ahold of Jason at DOB, he can probably give you some quick answers, I think he has been there and done all of this:

New idea, just got off the phone with a friend who quickly and without a doubt recommended the Killer Chiller unit over the HE. After reading reviews and researching for the last 2 hours I have yet to read anything but absolutely great reviews. Only negative thing I see is a reduction in the AC in cabin but I can live with that. Thoughts? Thanks Bert, I'll definitely try and get a hold of DOB
