SLP got a completely stock GTO to do a 13.08 or something like that. I think the car will surprise some people. I think it will be a drivers race between the GTO and the GT.

As far as the mufflers are concerned, it's best to put the muffler as far away as possible from the engine. Cooler air occupies less volume making it easier to flow through the muffler thereby making it more eficient.

According to Edmunds, the GTO with a 6-speed invoices for $29.7k and is selling for $32.2k. If you wait a little and find the right dealer I'll bet you can get a GTO for $30.5k. I think that is a good value. If only they had put ANY effort whatsoever into making the car look anything other than a cavalier...

While the GTO is not the most exciting looking car to hit the streets, in all fairness, neither were the originals for the most part. I guess in that sense, the new GTO does reflect the spirit of the original. On the plus side, the discreet looks of the GTO will make for a better Q-ship!
Otherwise, I think it is, in aggragate, an excellent car and one of the best products to come out of, if not Detroit proper, GM. This is especially true of the very tastefull, stylish and high quality interior -- I hope this serves notice to the other GM divisions on how a well done modern interior can and ought to be done.
As for the rest of the car, the motor is obviously a boomer, even if pushing around a touch more avoirdupois than the GT. Should GM feel compelled to up the ante, the Z06 and new 6 liter LS6 motors are easy shoe ins. And the thang does sound nice!
The excellent IRS suspension should give it a broader handling envelope and better allow it to carry its speed through varied roads and conditions, with a comensurately better ride quality, than the buggy axle S197.
The price is higher, but your getting more, so it still represents and excellent value for the money. I imagine GM will spice up the styling a touch though I hope they avoid their tendancy to tacky and clownish excess -- Pontiac's most recent designs, the G6 and Soltice, give evidence the a new, more thougtful and tasteful styling ethic is taking hold.

Gotta give pontiac some credit, they've tuned WS6 suspensions very nicely for years... I too can't get excited about it's looks though... Let's see what happens when they get the judge package together.

The GT doesn't outperform it, but it's not a blowout on the GTO end either.
Well... if they started making turns and not going in a straight line the GTO would pull away.

It actually pulls less g's in the corners than the mustang (I read that somewhere).

Smooth corners, I'd guess they have similar grip, one aspect of handling, but start adding the lumps and bumps so typical of most real world roads and I'd guess the GTO's IRS would be better able to maintain a higher level of grip in these circumstances.
I'd also guess that it would deliver a better ride quality too for its level of handling, especially as the road gets choppy.
But of course, as I said, these are all comparitive guesses until a Goat goes horn to muzzle with the Mustang. Despite the potential various suspension designs might offer - or not - so much of it, in the end, comes down to good solid engineering and attention to details and final tuning.

I realize that I'm biased but I really think the 05 mustang may kill the "cooler" GTO supposedly coming in 07 or 08 before it ever gets out the gate. I think these cars are essentially aimed at the same market and even if the GTO has a performance advantage I have a hard time believing that many will go for the boring styling of the goat at a $5k-$10k premium over the GT. In fact I'm really curious to see where Pontiac is headed in general right now. Critics are applauding their new "grown-up" styling and shedding all the body cladding but at least on the roads around here it doesn't seem to be translating to sales. IMHO I think Pontiac is alienating their market and is at great risk of blending themselves into GM brand obscurity.

If GM had just found some way to get around that styling, the GTO would be a booming center field home run.

G.M. doesn't have a rear wheel drive mid-size car anymore ...so they had to work with the only available ...And trying to make this Ausi into an American Muscle car is not working :notnice:

Yes both the GTO and Monte Carlos SS cars were big disappointments. What idiots would ruin such American classics, wait as I recall GM brought back the LeMans and Nova as compact cars. Ford almost screwed up by Making the "GULP" Probe the new Mustang. Thanks to die hard Mustang fans, Ford changed there minds. Guess it goes to show that stang owners are more brand commited, I never heard a peep from GM fans about the ruined classics.
