The new GTO SUCKS! lol. I has 50 more HP than the mustang, but it still can't beat the stang to 60, hahaha! I is a true GOAT. They screwed that car up. The '99 concept was BAD! Check out the attatchment. Pontiac just got cheap with that car. All they did is take a Monero and drop a chevy engine in it, lol.

All pontiac does is tweak the exhaust, change the front and rear facias, and put aleft hand drive interior in it and toss GTO badges all over it. But the car IS for all intesive purposes a Monaro.
This engine is the same engine that is in the c5 corvette and is used in a couple other Holdens besides the Monaro. And the cover on the motor certainly makes the engine comaprtment look cleaner.

The GT doesn't outperform it, but it's not a blowout on the GTO end either.
Well... if they started making turns and not going in a straight line the GTO would pull away.

HAH! the GTO has the Ls1, is praised by bob lutz, and yet, the 05 GT practically out performs it

the GTO has an IRS, 350HP, and a 6-speed... even though it is heavier it should outrun an '05... besides, no 'Stangs have yet to have a real road test.

I'm not so sure it will outrun the 05 in a drag, especially if the GT is under rated and has 320hp and 330lb-ft.

the GTO's best run I've seen yet is 13.8.....the new GT should easily beat that; atleast in the mid 13-low 13's

Better drivers might get the GTO into the mid 13's.

Dano,
what I should have said is it is all speculation until we see some real-world track times out of the Mustang...
the LS1's have been nutoriously underrated as well.... It would be nice to see some real time slips from both cars before people start bragging

I saw a review on Car and Driver TV about the new GTO not too long ago. They did not rate it so well. Said something about the car being thrown together too quickly to get it into the US market. That the car frame/suspension actually has been in production for a couple years in Australia and the GTO is a spin off of whatever that Austrailian car is.
They said it performed bad because they did not refine the suspension for US roads and highways yet. It was still setup based on the roads in Austrailia which require a harder/firmer ride/suspension.
Plus, they showed the back on the show and, although it has dual exhaust, both pipes come out in the driver side rear. :notnice:

Here's the Edmunds review:
http://edmunds.com/new/2004/pontiac/gto/10...rticleId=101578
I'd like to see what it can do with a manual transmission before passing judgement on its performance. If they could just do something with the styling, and drop the leather interior and a few other things to get it under 30K I think it would be more interesting.
This car is just a warmup for 2007, something they wipped up quick without a lot of time or R&D dollars. The important thing is that it's driving the right wheels, a promising trend.

Here are the exhaust setups for the GTO and '05 Mustang GT. I know there have been a lot of complaints about the Mustang's mufflers being too far back. Which one do you like better?
#36
Again, it should be noted why the mufflers are where they are on both cars..
on the GTO, the gas tank was behind the rear bumper (apparantly moved the trunk now)
On the Mustang, the gas tank is before the rear axle, roughly where the GTO mufflers are...
it is a small tradeoff IMO to have to see the mufflers through the rear exhaust, most people forget that the gas tank on the '05 is probably the safest spot it can be. The current Mustang gas tank is right behind the rear bumper.
