Markups, Still!

Are you guys counting 2005 Mustang sales from January 2005 to December 2005? I thought the 2005's were being sold in Sept. 2004 and the 2006's were being sold as early as July 2005.

And, yes, the sales numbers can be confusing because between Jan 1, 2005 and Dec 31, 2005 the sales #s reported by Ford will include , 2005 model year Mustangs, 2006 model year Mustangs and even left over 2004 Model year Mustangs that were sold during calander year 2005.
Ford only publicly reports montly sales #s for each of its models, it does not break out those monthly sales #s by model year nor by trim level (V6 deluxe, V6 premium, GT deluxe, GT premuium, etc.).
In reality it doesn't matter whether how many of any month's sales #s are 2005 MY or 2006 MY, the important # is what are the overall sales #s verses monthly production #s.

I would be interested in seeing how this Sep Oct and Nov compared to last Sep, Oct, and Nov. This would remove the seasonal effects on mustang sells so that one could compare apples to apples.

2005 /2004 %Change
Sep 10,976/6,333 +73.3%
Oct 11,234/9,232 +21.7%
Nov ?/12,816
Obviously they were just starting in Sep 04 so it's no surprise that it has a 73.3% increase this year. Oct 05 was 21.7% better than last year so things aren't too out of wack.
Last Nov they sold 12,816 Mustangs. I wonder if they will beat that this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they got within 10% of last November (at least 11,535).
Also as of 23 Nov 05, AAI plant is still working overtime according to the Ford Media Site http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?...0&make_id=trust
Those are sales #s not production #s.
Comparisons 2004 - 2005 are not meaningful because production of the 05 did not start until Sept 7 2004 and very few 05 Mustangs had made it to dealers before the end of the month. So sales in Sept. 04 were really left over 04 Mustangs. Since 04 Mustang production stopped in May 04, there were few 04s still left for sale by September.
Even October 04 is not a meaningful comparison as 05 Mustang production in September was less than 50% of normal, so there still few 05 Mustangs available for delivery in October (It it normal to take 2 - 4 weeks for a car to arrive at a dealer).
It will be interesting to compare Nov 04 to Nov 05 as Nov 04 was the 1st month where 05 Mustangs were available at dealers for delivery in reasonable quantities.

Ford has released it's November sales #s and I'd say it's not a pretty picture for the Mustang
November is the first meaningful comparison month as in Sept and Oct 04, 05 MY Mustangs were just starting to arrive at dealers and the 04 MY Stangs were pretty much cleared out by mid Sept.
November 04 - 12,816
November 05 - 11,030
Change -13.9%
How can Ford's hottest product be slipping in sales so soon?
#1 - Dealer Markups
#2 - Ford's screwed up allocation that is sending too few GTs to the Northeastern states.
#3 - Ford is producing too many V6s and not enough GTs.
It won't be long before Ford will have to stick rebates on the 06 Mustang. But I don't know how in the world Ford will put a $2K rebate on an 06 Mustang while it's dealers are still asking for $5K markups and loading cars up with overpriced dealer add ons.

Actual #'s 99,620 V6, 60,792 GT. Total 160,412 2005 year model Mustangs.
Don't beleave that at all,,,,,,,,,,,,,Those number have to be wrong......
most dealers had tons of 2005 V6s and No GTs so i really feel yea numbers are wrong unless you can prove different..My numbers are still 1 GT to 30 V6s unless you can prove me wrong.......JT

To put Mustang 2005 YTD sales into perspective with the other coupes on the market, take a look at this site:
http://www.automobear.com
Under "YTD Sales 2005" on the left side of the page, click on "mainstream coupes" (the red '05 Mustang
) Take a look at the chart that comes up. Notice that really long bar on the chart, the ones that's more than twice the length of any other bar on the graph. Which car is that?

If December sales are similar (which I think they will), Mustang sales will be around 160,000 for 2005. Not too bad but still way below the 200,000 units some analysts predicted earlier this year.
Even though I purchased another vehicle at employee pricing in summer (I needed a car), I still keep in touch with various Ford internet sales departments. Prices for the GT seem to come down and dealerships are finally willing to deal.
4 months ago, the best I could get was $200 off a GT. Yikes!
Now many of them are willing to do X-plan.
Even here in SoCal where dealers routinely ask for way over MSRP not all too long ago.
I also noticed that some of the 2005 GT's I inquired about in summer, could apparently not be sold and were still sitting on the lots in late Oct/early Nov.
I know for a fact that Vista Ford in Woodland Hills (who offered me $200 off in July), had 7 unsold GT's on their lot which were advertised in the local paper at a $2,800 discount.
I also believe that rebates will be introduced next year.
It everything goes well (for us, the consumer), a GT might be had for
$4000-$5000 off by next summer.

Unless you have a source with figures to the contrary, I'll believe the 160,412. For no other reason than that no one in the TMS registry has a higher Vin# than 259,953 (which correlates to 159,953rd mustang for MY05). As far as 1 GT to 30 V6, look here. http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/timeline/0...Guide120104.pdf
According to this Ford document, the recommended mix for 2005, between V6 and GT was 62% V6 and 38% GT. How does this compare to the numbers above? 99620/160412 = 62.1% for V6s. Sounds like valid #s to me.
November 05 - 11,030
The problem is, once word gets around that buying a Mustang is a PITA - markups, overpriced dealer add ons, potential customers just say forget it and buy something else.
Yes I agree that Ford will soon have to put incentives on the Mustang. They will probably put low APRs first, trying to avoid cash rebates as long as possible. Once they put cash rebates on the Mustang, the "Great Sales" charade is over.

44 Mustangs
18 GT COUPES-13 automatic, 5 manual
8 GT VERTS- 7 Auto, 1 manual
15 V6's-12 Pony package with Auto, (2 manual 1 auto no Pony pkg)
3 V6 VERTS automatic and pony
If thats high allocation then I understand why there is 0 inventory here in the North East.

Ford's allocation system sucks. Out of the 6 Ford dealerships around me in the KC area, no dealer has more than 2 GT coupes. Then to make it worse, some dealers are installing crappy add ons to inflate the prices.

Excellent point. The Mustang has been and continues dominating the coupe market.
Remember folks, this is a bit of a niche car. It takes a very specific customer to buy a Mustang, unlike a Fusion or an F-150.
Even though the 'analyst' numbers were a bit more optimistic than what reality will be, the way the 'stang is dominating it's market is quite impressive.

It's early December, 2005 and they're still pushing Mustangs with $3K - $5K markups here in northern California.
So if someone wanted to buy a 'Stang, but didn't want to pay what dealers are asking, maybe they'd consider buying a used one for say... $27K? That's what I paid for mine NEW! Boy did I get a deal! And I know others got theirs for far less than me.
Are these obscene dealer "market adjustments" helping to maintain used car values?
I agree with you folks; market adjustments seem almost criminal. Especially since these cars have been around a while.
