Hello!! My girlfriend's son just turned 18 and wants to buy a 2006 Mustang, manual trans with a V-6. The one he is currently looking at has 125k miles. I would appreciate any info you all could provide about common issues with these cars so I know kind of what to look for.

I have owned 1966 Mustang and 1985 Mustang, and have some basic mechanical knowledge but I generally leave vehicles made after 1995 alone. We do intend to take the car to a mechanic to look it over also.

Battery drain, leaky thermostat housing, water leak from plugged cowl drains that mess up the smart junction box, and popping noise when going over speed humps.

It does, thanks!! I take it the smart junction box is the fuse box plus other stuff?? From what I have found on the interweb it is located on the passenger side footwell is that correct??

 

Correct, passenger side footwell.

Often there will be issues with the rear tail lights when the smart junction box is messed up. Lights out, not flashing when they should, etc.

Take a blue shop paper towel with you and push hard in that crease at the footwell looking for dampness. A good nose sniff for mildew would work too.

Not sayin' it does the trick... but it seems to work for mine, after having several alternators and batteries die in the poor thing... now she seems very happy about things.

The rest of that stuff... Awesome doesn't (yet?) seem to have any issues of the sort. Almost 140K daily driving, and all that stuff hasn't happened. Maybe the thermostat housing will blow now, with my luck... And I clean my cowl drains out... can't say as to the other water entry issue they have on that side, but so far she's not ever gotten water over there...

I think we should add the 4.0 V6 crank pulley failure to the list.
