Look Ma, no EGR!

Did Ford eliminate the EGR from the 4.6 3V V8 engine? The FSM makes no mention of it... If this is indeed true, I think it is a pretty good engineering practice. While the EGR does reduce NOx and helps boost gas mileage, it is expensive to replace and will clog up over time... not to mention it injects hot air back into the intake stream resulting in hotter combustion chamber temps.

I did notice Ford requiring much higher than normal cylinder head temperatures. The electric fan is required to turn on about 10F-15F higher than what is usually specified in other cars.

The hotter the engine, the cleaner the burn, and more efficient...in theory at least. I read somewhere that if an all ceramic engine could be made to work properly, it could run at much much higher temps, and produce around 80% efficiency. Current engines produce only around 20-30% efficiency.

The EGR system is designed to reintroduce exhaust gas back into the combustion cycle lowering combustion temperatures and reducing the formation of NOx.

And that's why they sell EGR delete kits for the 4.6 2V mustang GTs? An engine that is warmed up/hot works efficiently, but IIRC a hot air intake temperature isn't as good for performance. The colder the air that is coming in, the denser it is and the more oxygen (fuel) content there is, IIRC that is.

Quoted directly from a Ford Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnostis service manual.

I seem to recall reading that EGR gases were also used to help prevent detonation.

The question remains, does the '05-07's have an EGR?

I did not see any settings for EGR in the 07 calibration and my FSM makes no mention of it. A cursory evaluation of the engine compartment did not reveal the presence of an EGR valve or transducer.

I don't see any connections on the exhaust manifolds or cat pipes for an EGR.

No egr thanks to variable cam timing.

So all that stuff about cooling the combustion chambers with recirculated exhaust gas was BS? VCT was designed mainly to reduce emissions and improve gas mileage.

And improve performance, with the vct there is some valve over lap at times that accomplishes the combustion cooling without an egr.
