I have a can of Clear Coat automotive paint that smells just like "New Car Smell" when it dries. I'm guessing the paint fumes is part of the new car odor.

it all depends on the temperatures your car will live in.
right here in Dubai, with the soaring heat.. i lost the new car smell in less than 4 months

I've had my car since May of '05 and I still have the smell! Of course, it's a garage queen so that helps.

The new car smell will last only as long as you keep your foot out of it. Once you put your foot in it and crap your pants, it's all over

Always deal with flatulence BEFORE entering the vehicle, and wait for dissipation to prevent "follow through".

Four months and the new car smell was history. I used to catch faint reminders every so often but now even those have faded... Ah well... it was fun while it lasted!

FYI, NEVER use car wash brand "new car smell" - it stinks like a locker room. PTUY!!!
