Question How to change taillight bulbs??

I did a search and came up with nothing.. My turn signal went out last night on me and need to change it out but don't know how. Does the whole assembly have to be removed or is there an easier way??

The whole assembly has to be removed. It's not that hard, only three bolts from the inside of your trunk (I believe 13mm) and the taillight assembly comes off.

It's a bit harder with a Shaker 1000 if it's your passenger side taillight but still shouldn't take you more than 10 mins or so.

I think its in the owner's manual... either that or they tell you to take it to the dealer.... The '98 Taurus in my family is also a PITA to change the rear bulbs

Thanks, I have the shaker 500 so that's not a problem if the passenger one goes out. It's the drivers side that has to be changed and figured the whole thing has to come out.

I'm sure it is, but I'd rather not take a chance of getting a scratch (in the plastic) or worse over a light bulb from some of those yahoos at the dealership.

I'm only taking it in for warranty for something that costs too much or for something that's beyond me.

I'm with Ya! I won't either.

That was for folks with dailies that get a bit knocked around the block anyway.

Same here too. My foglights have had a film on the reflectors since day 1 that never goes away. I've heard that some have had theirs replaced multiple times. I'm just leaving them.....I'd rather not have one of the mechanics put scratches on the bumper, etc.

I had to change a turn signal bulb last week myself. It's relatively easy after doing it once, and I'm sure from the instructions in the manual that they (service dept.) would just as soon charge their hourly rate to do it vs. do-it-yourselfers. Here it is: There is a large plastic screw (1 each side) on the inner trim piece. Remove this screw, and pull back the trunk felt from behind it in order to reach the 3 nuts that are holding the taillight assembly from the inside of the trunk (3 black nuts on brass/metal bolts). Then pull the tailight assembly outward and change whichever bulb it is by turning the specific bulb assembly (3 plus 1 for backup bulb) and then pulling bad bulb straight out and plugging new bulb straight in.

Just changed them out today, took about 10 mins. To my surprise, the 3 bolts holding in the assembly were loose......... checked the other side and 2 were semi-loose, tightened them up and everything is good. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I got mine finger tight and then turned a wrench a full turn. You don't want to over tighten them because you can pull the bolt right out of the plastic light housing pretty easily...........

TacoBill, that is one great how-to write-up, and the pics show exactly what you need to know.

I wired my tail lamps so all three function as brake/directionals (the inboards are only marker lamps). And, your pics show exactly what I did to get to them. It's not hard, but it is kind of a lot to do just to get at the bulbs. My '96 was pretty similar.
