Hood liner - is it really necessary?

Hey, any of you guys that have removed the factory hood blanket have an aftermarket coolant temp gauge? If so, have you noticed any decrease in temp? I'm curious since the thing apparently holds heat unless I'm reading some of the above posts wrong. Sorry OEM "coolant gauge" guys, the factory "gauge" is too stupid to see a difference Also, has anyone considered one of these as an alternative to painting?

Update: I didn' take off the liner, a friend of mine just pointed the CAI down abit and no rubbing anymore!! Not really sure how or what he did exactly but it worked thats all that matters. Don't really want to take off liner as of yet, my Stang is still new pretty much.

I've had an aftermarket, linerless, ventilated fiber hood since the first month of ownership of my 07 GT. Here I am 25k miles later and from what I've seen the engine stays CLEANER due to airflow blowing the dirt away from the engine. My engine stays cleaner than any other car I've owned that HAD a hood liner.
A quick water pressure blast every month or so and the engine still looks like brand new.
Lower temps, better airflow and cleaner engine.

The liner is there for sound insulation. There is a myth floating around about an engine fire and that the pins will melt supposedly releasing the liner to smother the fire. Totally untrue.
I've noticed on every liner I've installed that the underhoods aren't completely painted, especially in the middle. Owners take off their liners, true, but sometimes their underhoods will get dirty anyway. They'd have to clean their underhoods to keep them clean. My liner has been on my car for a year and a half now and it hasn't gotten dirty at all.

Good info thanks. I pulled my liner off and the underhood is 100% painted and looks good. Just a matter of wiping it down every time I wash the car.

I've already bookmarked your site. I was in the market for one before pulling off the liner which was sagging. Then saw the paint was perfect so I was good to go.
