HID for Fogs?

Do the fogs require that special relay? or will any kit do?

The fogs have a 15 amp relay.
With HID lights you probably only want to use the circuit to switch on the kit's relay, not the light's power draw.

So a plug and play kit really wont be a plug and play with the fogs? I'm looking at buying the 3000k HID kit from stangmods.

Sorry about that link, I was on my friends laptop and wasn't aware of that.

But I'm atleast sure that 3000k will give me a yellow/golden color. I just want to know exactly what the install is gonna take and the opions of others.

If you want yellow/gold why bother with HID's at all? I've owned a few cars with HID's and really don't think they put out any better light then a good halogen setup and just annoy other drivers, and any in the 'white'(still blue) or blue ranges actually distort some colors and can be distracting to the driver. I think its just bling in the long run.

Agleon, I have installed HID foglights - It's a PITA.

You will need to mount both ballasts somewhere along the core support - that means removal of the front bumper and grille. I ended up mounting my ballasts in the headlight buckets.

You'll then want to tap into the main power block for the startup power. Your foglight circuit only serves to energize the lights, but doesn't actually power them (the 10 gauge wire to your power block does).

I have photos of the install if you are interested.

Bottom line is I would only do this install if you are interested in "HID" light, which means either 4300k or 6500k.

If you do 3000k IMHO you are wasting your money and time - just buy Silverstars for $40 and call it a day.

To me that looks extremely bright and that it's going to produce good lighting. Also I just read this about 3000k HIDs "The 3000K capsule is actually a 5000K capsule specially coated with a film that filters out all the wave length except the range of wave length which emits yellow."

Taking a picture of any light bulb at night tends to look bright. Being that the lights are way to low to be effective at much of anything, its an eyesore for oncoming drivers more then anything else.

HID Fogs

I installed AmericanMuscle HID (8000K)Fog Kit this winter. Front grill took right off car to work on. Ballasts, one fit in corner by windshield washer filler drilled 2 holes for bolts and two sided velco under bracket as well (covered connections in case of washer spillage) and other side used bolt on bracket that holds brake lines and more velco under it. Wires down to fogs and up to ballast from HID bulb setup. Read posts where the black bulb shield already in fogs will fall out so put some 650C glue around shield base (Qtips & bent paper clip job) so will see if they stay in. Everything just plugs in easy, only problem was Bulb male connector blades to cars Fog wiring doesn't include bakelite plug cover so got them from suvlights.com, wire with blades slide and snap into bakelite and then just plug into cars female fog wire end. HID bulb mount lugs didn't quite fit in 3 mount line up holes so filed bit off one lug and in it went, HID bulb turned snug in fog housing.

Haven't had out at night (still snowed in) but in garage Low Beams are like Puny Candles in comparison to HID fogs. Instructions say not to look directly at without sunglass's I can see why.

Took temp of fog housing exterior w/HAL & HID, HIDs run at least 30 degrees cooler, when rad fan comes on their temp falls to under 100 (after 20minutesHID read 135 - HALS 160 just sitting & no rad fan) None of kits I have looked at include a relay in their wiring that I could see, may get a separate wire kit from suvlights.com if find I use them a lot to run direct from battery power. Have DLR lights so this is my alternative to HID Headlights, don't drive much at night but when I do I think these will work fine.

HIDs were cool 5 years ago. The new hotness is LED headlamps... Standard on the 2008 Audi R8 and 2007 Lexus something (I can't keep track of the model #).

Supposedly the LED headlamps are on-par with HIDs, except LEDs are impervious to vibration and water/moisture.

So will I have any improvment in lighting if I get yellow HIDs for my fogs? and Also will I have any problem with the reflector melting off?

"The headlight assembly is also characteristic to Audi. Featuring standard bi-xenon projector beams and 12-LED daytime running lights, the R8 sports a unique face, both at night and during the day. At the back, the 3-D effect of the LED taillights is also remarkable. Canadian models will get an engine bay with LED lighting, which should turn heads even more. "

White (clear) led lights will not make it as headlights, they do not have good range in clear. LEDS are great tail lights in red because red leds are bright and have a much further veiwing range. the whites are bright however take an led flash light in a dark room and shine it on the wall from 20ft away, now do the same with a maglight or other brand.

hi metroplex,
the LED lights are cool but u cant tell its LED really. i saw it in the Lexus LS flagship. HIDs i guess are finally cheap enough to buy. LED headlights are not even sold yet and from what im reading very complex to install.

HIDs are finally affordable. Im considering HID fogs at $199 from stangmods

Just like 66 05GT I installed the AmericanMuscle HID (8000K) kit but for my headlights and not fogs. Very easy install and I fashoned a plug for the on/off high/low from the base of a stock bulb. very impressed with the night time performance, I will be adding the fog kit in a month or so and may wire it up to act as a 2nd set of high beams for more light on the long curvey roads at night.

According to this site:
http://www.ledsmagazine.com/news/3/10/23

The Audi R8 uses all LED headlamps (no HIDs) and uses LEDs for the main projector. The 12-14 LEDs are used for DRLs, while a main projector (consisting of apparently 1 LED emitter) does the main lighting.
