Good list. So there are five cars out there in the Stang's price range that can compete with it - out of how many total vehicles? And each of those vehicles you listed are at the top of their performance spec.

Not bad, I'd say.

Two things >>

- Road & Track also tested the Mustang GT to 60 in 4.9 seconds.

- Here in Canada, a fully optioned IS350 goes for close to $60K...whereas a fully optioned Mustang GT (coupe) can be had for just under $40K - so it's not within $10K of the Stang's price. Moreover, the Lexus IS350 absolutely, positively CANNOT hit 60 in 4.9 seconds in the real world. That's

I know, because one of my best friends owns one.

Yeah, how many cars that car run with the Mustang have come and gone. The list is nice and respectfully are some bad machines. The Mustang has in 43 years with a let-up has shut all of the competition down. Sure the Challenger and Camaro are coming back, wonderful. The Charger and GTO are a little off. (Too many doors and just shy on looks)
The Mustang never left the building.. I think it is safe for me to say that the Evo, 350Z, WRX and blah-blah on wheels will never become classics or carry the legendary status of the Mustang. When they get old, they're just old fast cars. I say it with no disrespect because I dig fast cars but so what if they are faster or can run with a Mustang. I hope the gentleman who got butt kicked by that Galant doesn't feel too bad. Nobody notices a Galant on the street and at the end of the day, you go home with a legend. If it will make you feel better, we can spank some of the old school Stangs. Those guys don't care. They'll probably just give you a thumbs up and be happy that the Stang is still coming through, stronger and better than ever.

I agree with everything you said, and of course, it's all true - but the longevity of the Stang is a completely separate discussion.

Funny how the same rag that posted a 0-60 of 4.9s a couple years ago was only able to squeeze out a 5.3.

Something about that listing doesn't quite add up. Isn't the Mustang GT based at around 26K? Isn't the CS a special edition ?

Interesting...

Different drivers...? Different track...? Different altitude...? Different barometric pressure...? Different tire pressure...? Different launch technique...?

You see what I'm saying. They can all lead to varying results.

I think Road & Track wrote that .5 seconds in the 0-60 time is significant. In other words, if one car tests at 5.4 and another does 0-60 in 5.0, the cars are statistically the same. That explains why they once got 4.9 out of the '05 Mustang, but in their latest test it did 5.3.

That's good research, but it seems for all the cars except the Mustang, the price listed is the barebones MSRP. The Mustang listed is the special edition, that lists for $5K more than the standard base GT price.

So, if you go by MSRP of the base model, the Mustang is the least expensive of the lot, and you can throw out the IS 350 and the 335i since they're more than $10K over the Mustang's price.

A lot of times you also have to remember that people initiating a run are often ready to go at perfect rpms. Mustangs are not slow if you know how to drive them properly too, and are not afraid to downshift to the proper gear. A guy in a z4 the other day beat me because I just shifted into third at normal driving rpms and he went screaming off so he basically had a few seconds head start, whatever.... But those DSM cars like the old talons are nasty stuff when modded. I've seen rustbucket ones show up at a hangout and dust everything, Z06's STi's, whatever.

I used to mess with the sti's when they first came out and were the big deal. Going from light to light normal driving with him next to me, I would catch them at 2500rpm just shifting into second and then GO, no way they could catch up in a few seconds, even with a faster car. Other then playing around in very limited situations, I try to keep racing to the track. Every car has its advantages, if there's a modded WRX next to you and your going up a long sloping hill, if you quickly downshift and go he's just not going to catch you. If the same car is in front of you in a merge/yield lane and hes wound in 2nd and decides to go halfway through the turn onto a highway, good luck geting him.

That is very true. A friend of a friend had one of the early '90s versions of that car, and modded it heavily. From what I heard, he was beating the competition right, left and center.

Still, I'd be shocked if it could take a current model Z06. I just don't see any way that could be possible.

You can make any car fast with the right amount of money. You can probably drop a 30psi turbo on a lawnmower and run 10 second 1/4 miles all day.

and if you go down the list you will see one car that has 1041awhp.

heres their shop cars too.

8.97 sec in the 1/4
I see you didnt bother to mention the Jeep CJ7 they have running in the 8's either. Not to call you out bro but ANY car you put that much money into is going to flippen fly.

Give me enough money and I would be willing to bet we can get a 3V 4.6L throwing down well in excess of 1000rwhp.

**bah I spent too long looking at the Custumer rides on that sight and other people beat me to the point. I love all cars and the work people put into them. I tend to lean more towards domestics, that is true and i wont deny that. it's a pride thing. I really only hate the little bastids that get their parents to buy them a car and pay for all their parts then insist that they are "Lords of the Road". I have far more respect for the working class guy who takes a car and piece by piece turns it into reliable monster and enjoys every minute of it.**
