So after school today I was driving home and I decided I wanted to see how fast I could get my baby up to. I was on this stretch of highway with no one in front of me and one truck behind me. So I figured might as well punch it. So I did and right when I hit 100 mph, I hear the message center beep and it says 25 miles to empty. Ok not a problem, right?

The problem is when I left home this morning I had 1/2 a tank left. Round trip from home to school is 20 miles. 10 miles each way. And now it shows up that I have less than an 1/8th of a tank left? So I figured, ok maybe the reading is off from the gas moving around in the tank. After waiting a couple of hours, I just went outside and started my mustang and it still says I have an 1/8th of a tank left. I have a feeling something is wrong here. I could not have burned 1/4 of a tank by going 100mph for less than a mile. Not sure whats going on here. And the message center never showed 50 miles to empty as it has in the past. Whats up?

Hopefully tomorrow morning it shows more than a 1/4 of a tank remaining. Or else looks like I'm getting some gas.

Also gas is finally dropping substantially around here. I paid 2.64/gal in San Francisco .

Given it was a 97 mustang, but I had a similiar issue. Gas Sensor was kaput. Showed half a tank, then none. No inbetween. Needless to say, I got towed to the dealer for a fix.

Watch it, if it happenes again, take it in and have it checked.

Highway 35 at the San Francisco/Daly City border.

fuel sending unit could be stuck....i would top it off....it could have been stuck on a 1/2 tank then got freed up...fill it up..see how much gas it takes...that will give you the answer you are looking for is it working or not....

Given the current gas prices, someone could have "borrowed" some gas while you were in class...

The mustang has a "saddle bag type of fuel tank" it shaped this way to clear the driveshaft,so yes there could be more fuel on one side of the tank than the other and may give you an innacurate reading on your gauge.Try a couple of hard turns to see if the fuel levels out between the the two sides.

One more thing: I work at a Chrysler dealer and the Dodge Magnum has the same type of tank, and there are two sensors in the tank (one on each side) and the two level sensors measure the fuel and average it out to give you an approximate reading on the gauge. The Mustang probably has the same type of system, hence your strange readingon your gas gauge.

I personally would check the mileage the old fashioned way first.

I'll bet someone may have borrowed your gas or you had those fuel sending unit problems.

Like Louie suggested, I'd just fill it up and see if it happens again. The C5 Corvette has the dual gas tank design like the Mustang, and in the past it also had similar problems to what you described, especially after a fill-up. I belive the solution was to replace a sending unit.

Nothing is wrong here, no one stole my gas and my fuel sensors aren't broken (Thank goodness). I started her up this morning and my first turn, the fuel went from 22 miles to empty up to 81 miles to empty. I guess the fuel was just displaced so much that the sensors couldn't get a correct reading. Glad I don't have a problem with that. Now I gotta take it into the shop on Monday to get the vert top fixed.
