My wonderful girlfriend is giving my a G-Tech Pro RR for a birthday present. I think it'll be a fun 'toy' to play with. But I'm not going to cast the results in stone.

I've never had one of these, but from what I've read and heard, the latest versions are fairly accurate. Most guys who run there's at the track say it's accurate less than .1 seconds to what the time slips say.

I think the key to using it is consistancy. Keep on level ground, not a lot of bumps, good mount, and it should give fairly accurate 60 ft, 0-60, 1/8. 1/4, etc times.

Like I said, it's more of a toy and a check to see if a mod made any improvement. I think having the same driver on same stretch of road everytime may help in consistency.

Anybody use one of these? Opinions?

Tell her to pass on the G-Tech and pick up one of these instead Dynamic Performance Information Center

But to answer your question, I think it would be a fun toy.

How the heck can these things tell you how much HP, torque, and 0-60 times when they aren't even connected to your engine? I looked at them on the website. They look awsome but I couldnt figure out how they work.

I'd guess they just use some equations. I dont know what the insides of these things look like but I'd guess there is probably mercury (or somesort of liquid) in there that kicks off the calculation based on its movement......maybe?

See page 97 of the July Hot Rod magazine. The writer was pleasantly surprised by the accuracy and felt with a bit more twiddling could have got it even closer to runs made at the track. I'm getting one.

There was an article on Road&Track.com or Car&Driver or Motortrend, can't remember which one. They reviewed a few of them and had good things to say about most of them.

I have one. Is it excellent. Very accurate. Was only off by .06 seconds with my old car. MPH is was off a little more but that is cuz the G-Tech gives you the final speed at the 1/4 and not the average over the last couple of feet.

But as mentioned above, the trick is to make sure you are consistant with it.

There is a write up in the latest issue of hot-rod magazine, they give it good marks, it was very close to track time in the report they had.

I finally got a chance to run the G-tech. Conditions were great: 30 feet above seal level, winds calm, altimeter 29.92, and temperature was 63, so only 4 degrees above the standard day temperature of 59F. About as good as it gets for a baseline. Since I'm an aviator, I have access to nice long closed runways for you safety guys.

I was very pleased with the results. I am far from a great driver, and I'm sure the car can do better than me. Power adder mods are SCT 93 Octane tune and JLT CAI. Also a JBA catback which probably doesn't give much, but sounds good. Also, half tank gas, car is "normal" with spare tire and all, one soul on board.

Anyway, out of 4 runs, here was the best:

60' 2.19s
330' 5.80s
1/8 8.85s
1000' 11.4s
1/4 13.59@103.4mph
0-60 4.96s

I ran on the same pavement in opposite directions. And each run got a little slower, I'm guessing from the motor getting hotter. This run was the first, and turned out to be the best.

So what do you think of the results? Do they go along with those with real time slips?

I didn't do a HP run. The HP run is totall different than an ET run. You basically just get off the line at a good pace, maybe 75% throttle, shift into 2nd gear once you reach 3000rpm in first, then floor it all the way up to redline in second, shift into 3rd, and run is over. It only measures through 2nd gear. I didn't bother since I've heard it was inaccurate anyway. But for the regular runs, it said 330, which I might have at the crank if I'm lucky.
