That started when BMW started picking up the tab with included maintenance during the warranty period. It used to be more around 7,500 or so. They also tout "lifetime" fluid in the trans and rear. Not the best idea in my book...

My dad was going to PAY for the oil change, but the service advisor said to wait until the computer tells you to change it.

I run M1 with the OEM Motorcraft filter. I change the oil at 5,500 miles or 6 months. With a good quality synthetic, 5K+ oil changes are perfectly safe.

And the 7500 mile interval is based on the Motorcraft Semi-Syn Blend oil. If you use full synthetic, such as Mobil1, I'm sure you would be good for 10,000. That is what I am planning, but I drive about 50 miles a day on the interstate, and about 5 miles a day in the city. Very easy on the oil and engine.

They will send you a kit for free, you just pay to ship it back to them with the sample. Shipping is $1.59 USPS. Standard testing is 22.50 I think, and a T(otal) B(ase) N(umber) is an extra $10. That tells you how much acidity your oil can neutralize, and gives an idea of how much longer the oil is good for. see the site for further. They also give you a personalized report on your oil, written by a human who interprets the results. Great piece of mind if you ask me!

5000 miles on Mobil 1 is hardly taxing it out. Expect about 9k-10k before the TBN drops and the oil begins to thicken.

Let me clarify: the 7,500 mile oil change interval applies to several '07 model year vehicles and has been announced to apply to several '08 model year vehicles so far. These include:

Mariner
F-series Super Duty (gas engines)
The hybrid Escape and Mariner oil change interval remains 10,000 miles.
The extended intervals are made possible by the improved properties of ILSAC GF-4 oils and many many hours of dynomometer testing and millions of miles of vehicle fleet testing. If you drive your vehicle in 'normal' conditions and own one of the above vehicles, you'll be just fine with the longer intervals.
