Electrical Issues Made for a Interesting Ride Home Tonight
I had a pretty interesting ride home tonight. About 8 miles away from my house the ABS dash light came on and I got a check the traction control message on the info screen. The car still seemed ok I tested the brakes and they felt fine. I drive a couple more miles and traffic got a little backed up well my radio dropped out. Then a few more miles my head lights turned off. Of course at this point I'm pretty close to my parents place so I am praying to make it there. I keep distance from the car in front of me and was able to get into my parents neighborhood where I lost all power. My father and I took a look at the car. I wasn't able to start it up until just a few minutes ago. We checked the battery and it's not getting a charge. I hooked the XCal2 up and got a P0340 and P0344 error code but I've had them for about a week. The car has been running fine um...well until now. Any thoughts as to what might be going on? I'm thinking alternator.

I found out the codes you show are for the camshaft position sensor.
Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
What does that mean?
This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include:
A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

- Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
- Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
- Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
- Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
- Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
- Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
- Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

I've had this happen too (not THIS 'stang, my '72). It is a sick feeling knowing your ride is dying while driving it. I had forgotten before reading your post and it all came back in a rush...

Many of us have had alternators go out, mine did too. Since I bought my 06 GT I couldn't let the car sit for 1 week without the battery going dead. One day I jump started it, ran it for about 5-10 mins, cut it off then tried to start it again with no luck. Then I went to jump start it again and when I hooked up the cables the alternator went up in smoke! Not figuritively, LITERALLY! It was a LOT of smoke everywhere! Scared the crap out of me! I replaced the alternator and the battery and have never had a problem since.
I just read another horror story about a guy with a Roush that had a similar incident. He took his to the dealer. They replaced the alternator and it went up in flames, severe fire damage. Fortunately mine didn't do any damage because I cought it immediately! Replace the alternator and (if needed) the battery and you'll be all set. -Joe

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I have been busy with my best friends wedding all weekend and just got a chance to read the forum again. How much should I expect to pay for a new alternator?

They are $300 - $400 for the stocker and about the same for aftermarket. Dustin installed an aftermarket one. See post #23 here:

I am getting the P0340 code also, but I am getting surging at constant speeds (highway driving) and some bucking. No electrical issues at all.
Also out of warranty.
Replace the sensors?
