Drag Strip Versus Street
Drag Strip Versus Street
Hi, Newbie here! I have a pretty simple question. What kind of time difference can you expect from racing a 1/4 mile on a street versus a drag strip? I live nowhere near a dragstrip, probably going to try to get to one within a month or so. About 10 miles from my house is a closed road that people always go "play" at. I took my buddies G-Tech to see what the car would do with my mods I just made.
I know they aren't perfect, but they can give you an idea. The best 60 foot time I could get was 2.70 at 30 MPH, and the car was trapping 1/4 mile speed at 103.8 at 14.5 seconds. What kind of time could I expect at a drag strip? I didn't do anything major to the car, Steeda Underdrive pullies, Steeda CAI 93 octane tune , GMS 60,000 volt coil pack, twin 62mm throttle body, flowmaster axleback exhaust.
Thanks

You should hook much better at the strip, from my experience with an older G-tech is it over states the mph but the 1/4 times were always pretty close to what you'd get with the given 60 ft.

you'll hook really good on the track, you'll get actual times, the track will be better (no danger of cracks, sticks, rocks, etc), and it's alot safer. The track is an excellent place to get it out of your system
I bought a Passport G-Meter a few months ago from Amazon and it was dead on accurate. Everything from 60ft times to 1/4 mile ET/MPH was spot on. It was also on sale for $50 bucks. It beats a 200 mile round trip to Beech Bend for 2-3 passes on street car night. If you have a Iphone you can also download an app that measures all the same parameters and from what I have read it is very accurante also.

I've ran 12.8 and 1.8 60' on an unprepped track with MT ET Streets while N/A, CAI, 93 tune, and pulleys. With Nitto 555s I was running 13.4 and 2.0 60'. All the races here are on airport runways or taxiways, same as the street.
Just keep practicing your 60' time and your ET will drop dramatically. You can't stomp the pedal at the launch, you need to feather it ensuring you have maximum power with minimum wheel spin.

My best ET sofar is a 13.33 at 104 MPH with mods in sig and auto trans. Average runs at same conditions are 13.39-13.44 at the same MPH. Thats at 3796 lbs., 84 degrees, 42% humidity, pressure of 30.28 in., and 881 ft. elevation. I average 2.01-2.09 60 ft times after some practice on the stock tires at 35 psi. and no burnout. Both the track timers at Beech Bend and the Passport timer are within a few hundredths and a 1/2 MPH. That is about as good as it gets with my local conditions.

103.8 mph is a low-mid 13 second car, not high 12's, especially if you stay on street tires. Put drag radials on your car and you might sneak a 12.999 once in a great while, but it's still a low 13 second car for all intensive purposes.
