Custom Ordering a Mustang
Custom Ordering a Mustang
Hi, I have never had the chance to own a mustang before (or any car that isn't a total beater for that matter) and have been heavily considering getting an 08 or 09 Mustang GT in the very near future (to hold me over until the 50th anniversary model of course). I'm not in it to win it at every stop light or time trial course so the stat differences between these years and any future years don't really get to me much, I just want to finally have the car I've been dreaming of for a very long time at a price I can actually afford (I just got out of college last spring and finally have a real job).
The only problem is I've fallen in love with a setup that is never on the lots. I would really like to get a Grabber Orange GT coupe with spoiler delete (or at least a lip/ducktail style one), no hood scoop (or at least a functional one) and silver Shelby style stripes in automatic (for shame I know, but I never grew up with manual cars).
The odds of this showing up on the lot are about the same as the odds that someone pulls into work and gives it to me for free, so I have been considering ordering it. Only problem is I've never done this before...Does it pretty much guarantee that I'll be paying full sticker price/MSRP for it? Or is it possible to still get the kind of deals that I would expect to see for the cars on the lot that are being ignored while people wait for the 2010's?
Or would I just be better off buying the cheapest one I can get locally and getting it painted and customized with after market parts (hood/spoiler/etc) to get it as close as I can?
This is going to be the first new car I've ever purchased so I've really been obsessing over it and I would really like to get it either legitimately new or with less than 3,000 miles on it. I've been checking autotrader almost daily as well as local dealer inventories with no luck. Any advice or information on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

If you could answer them here or PM me that would be great, that way I could sneak a peek at the forum during work on a break or at lunch if I don't get a chance to check it out before I get back from dinner. I'm also terrible at remembering things so it's always best if I can go back to it in text form ha ha. Thanks!
I order all the Mustangs for the dealership I work at. We special order cars & trucks for any customer, and I suspect you'll find that most dealers will, as well, if you talk to the right person (many salesmen "live for the day" on commission and want to sell you what's there today). Expect a special ordered 2009 Mustang to take 6-8 weeks to arrive, on average.
Price is still very negotiable when you order, and doesn't have to be MSRP (or any other amount, for that matter). We are special ordering 09 Mustang GT's for just $500 over invoice currently and any rebates you qualify for when it arrives are yours to keep. I suspect most dealers would offer as good a deal as us, and some probably even better.
Get the exact car you want!!!! Just find a nice dealer and be willing to wait 6-8 weeks for it to be built and shipped. You don't actually pay for (or finance) the car until it arrives, so just a super small deposit to the dealership is all you should need now.

Oh, and Dan, don't be ashamed of wanting an automatic transmission. Many of us have them (by choice!), including me. There's something magical about 440hp and not having to let off the gas for shifts!
Go for it...
I just ordered mine yesterday... I didn't see any of the 08's or 09's with the options I wanted and with the '09 model year being cut short it made sense to order it instead of waiting. Get the car you want... I did...

Hey dude, Brian did a knock-out job on the questions. I got a call and had to take it. You'll be fine if you want to order one. Also, you may also want to check on something else. If you work for a rather big, or a known company, you may qualify for X-Plan. The list of companies is HUGE (several thousand companies). It will take you under invoice instantly for any Mustang. If you PM me your company (or if your married, your spouse's company) I can check to see if they are on the list. Just another way to help you get a good price.
Feel free to PM/Post up with any questions.
They did take care of me and it was quite painless... Thanks for all of your help as well... When you know what your talking about the sales guys sense it and they drop the BS. This forum is an excellent place to increase your knowledge so you go in armed with information. Most of these sales guys do not keep up with options or anything. I knew more than they did which is normal. I have peace of mind and now all I have to do is wait...
CHEERS!
CHEERS!
I also ordered one. I found a friend that got me on Xplan and at the time they were running 1000 cash back so it was a pretty good deal for a new car. I put down 100 dollars at order but they never even cashed the check. Actually gave it back at time of delivery.
You probably can still do this but there was a forum where you can talk with some employees and get info on your build. You can go through the dealership also but they will get you a PDF window sticker online. Also the window sticker gets your name on it.

I happen to work for a company that qualifies for the X plan, so mine is on order as we speak (still waiting, waiting). Very easy, no haggling that way, and you get the best deal and exactly what you want.
If you're not one of the lucky X plan, try requesting here:

There's a small link at the top of the page under Ford Employee Forum. The guys on there often give out their unused numbers, and you're set. Just find the right dealer/salesperson.
Same site is where you can put up your VIN# and get some details on its progress.
JUST DO IT MAN!!

Order it. You won't be disappointed to get EXACTLY the car you WANT. Not anything less. Not anything more. The wait isn't that long.
I was like you, all my previous vehicles had been mostly junkers: 1976 Chevett, 1983 Mazda GLC, 1981 Ford F100 (I still have that truck. Took a load of boxes to the recycle place just today in it...). My 05 Mustang GT was the first (and so far only) new car I have ever had. Three years later and I STILL love that car.
Do yourself a favor, and make sure you get EXACTLY what you want. Not close. Not "but it's on sale today only". But EXACTLY what YOU want.

I wanted something VERY specific, and found it USED by looking hard.
I found a Vista Blue 07 without spoiler, light gray interior, leather, fanblade wheels, with less than 1400 miles, and saved about $6-$7k over new. ALSO he had already put on FRPP lowering springs, honeycomb rear panel, agent 47 mirrors, CAI, and lighted blue Mustang sills. It's like he was reading my mind, those were my first mods on my list. If I could have ordered a brand new Mustang, and spent $1000 modding it, I would have ended up with the same thing, it was very cool.
So what I am saying is it COULD happen. You have to look hard, far, and wide. Mine was a 7 hour drive away, and the ad was a poorly written ad at a small online ad site, without pictures. I TOTALLY lucked out. I also had been looking for a month before I found this.

Wow, thanks for all the information guys, this is indeed some good news to hear! I work for a small video game developer outside of Dallas, so there's no chance I'm on the x-plan list...We're small enough that I know what everyone here drives and only one car in the lot is a Ford (but it's a beautiful blue Roush Stage 1; actually the guy that drives it is the person who told me about this forum) so that hope will have to rest on checking out the blueovalforums.com link that was provided.
My next step is definitely going to be checking out that blueoval forum and going around to a couple of dealerships to decide who I want to order with. Thank you all for all the great information and insight! This place is phenomenal.
It's nice to hear something positive about driving an auto too, haha, a lot of the guys at work are car buffs who grew up driving manuals and cant drive or approve of anything else...Though I cant complain too much, as a result I get to mess around with some cool cars; the Roush, another co-worker has an supercharged Elise (which I sat passenger in for a time-trial course driven by another co-worker who used to be a pro autocross racer, pretty crazy!), a beautiful 2007 C6 Vette, and a couple of other really nice cars...

Don't be ashamed for wanting an auto. I owned an '06 manual GT for about a year and I realized I don't have the "gift" of peak manual accelerating skill (ironically about 98% of manual owners don't either but they wont admit it. Go visit your local track and witness the 13 second manual equipped GT500s and Vettes along with the 14 sec Bullitts and 4th gen F-Body owners). Only a few really have the skills and I ain't one of 'em. I have an '07 auto with Dougs race tunes and I run low/mid 13's all day long with mods in sig. Anyway get the auto and a tuner and you will be more than satisfied with your choice. Good luck with your purchase.

I own a stick. But I did actually think (for a day or so) about ordering an auto. The auto in the GT is a VERY nice tranny. If I didn't want a stick so bad, I could have easily got used to the auto.
