Since the affordable current performance benchmark from GM is the '04 GTO (not ignoring the Vette but its price puts it in another league) and the Ford Big Dog is the '03/'04 Cobra, I'm wondering if anyone has been up against either in a street race or especially at the track.

There are a lot more '05's out there now on the streets and I'm sure we've had more stop light wars than ever with these great cars.

I know there were some early posts about some roll on street races and such but I'm looking for actual drag races from a dead stop to a set finish line, be it at the strip (much preferred due to the clocks and mph readouts) or a street race (which is certainly never condoned).

How did you do? Is your car an auto or a manual? And what did you race?

there was a 1/4 mile video of a gto and the stang GT arguably the driver of the stang would have beat the GTO if he had been more familiar with the driving of it. It's listed on the forum here somewhere, but I'm not gonna search for it. As far as the Cobra... hahaha keep dreaming that an 05 GT will touch it.

Yeah, I saw that one. I'm asking about more recent runs since more and more '05's are hitting the streets every day.

And I agree with you about running a Cobra. However, even a Cobra can lose if its driver isn't experienced enough or good enough at driving at 10/10'ths.

I'm sure there are more than a few bad drivers. However, a lot of the 03/04 Cobras on the road have a pulley, and even a mediocre driver can win with a 250 horsepower advantage . Not exactly a fair fight. I hate to say it, for it sounds "importish", but if you want to take an 05 GT against an 03/04 Cobra, do it in the twisties .

The LS1 in the GTO puts out around 350 HP at the crank. Due to gearing the 2005 GT would hang from a stop through the 1/8th mile after that the GTO would walk it.

If the GTO was a 2005 with the LS2 it would just get uglier. I can't wait to get my Mustang but the car needs some mods before it goes after the big boys.

Welp, this logic would follow through on other cars witht he LS1, but hasn't proven so with the 04 GTO. MM & FF ran a 04 GTO and a 04 Mach 1 against each other. Right about a dead heat through the 1/4. The 04 GTO isn't suited well for getting the LS1 power to the ground. Now I've heard they are going to re-work the GTO for 05 to better accomodate the power, that will be ugly, but for the moment the 04 GTO loses out even with more power.

They didn't reveal exactly where or temps at the time of testing. Only that it was south cal on a late winter cool morning.

the best ET for the 04 GTO was 13.52 at 105.50

the best ET for the 04 Mach 1 was 13.47 at 104.25.

When a 05 GT and a GT do meet up on the street or track, the better driver is going to drive away with the win.

You're assuming that the 05 GT really does perform on par with an 04 Mach 1. Is that turning out to be true? So far it seems like the GT's are trapping much lower, right about 100 mph flat, right? So the GTO definitely has an edge in acceleration, it seems. Driver skill still plays a lot, but 5 mph isn't chump change.

The Mach 1 was getting 2.22 or 2.21 best 60 times, and the 05 commonly does it in sub 2 second times, so that isn't it. The 05 does trap slower than both the GTO and the Mach 1 tho.

Edit: When MT did a test on an 05 through the 1/4 the auto GT got 13.6 at just shy of 100. Even with just that single result, suffice it to say these cars will get the the 1/4 at roughly the same time. The LS1 does pull strong as heck after that, reguardless if yer in a GTO, F Body, whatever.
