Did You Order or Take From Dealer Stock?
I went online and put together the order I wanted. Brought that print out to the dealer and asked him if he could find me it, or something close.
He got me exactly what I wanted off of a lot in Jersey.

I guess I'm a bit picky, so I ordered my GT to fit my specs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one off the lot, if it absolutley had everything that I wanted and if the things it had that I didn't want, didn't raise the price to much or affect the way I ultimately want the car to look. Of the last 8 vehicles I've owned, I've ordered 4 and bought 4 off the lot.
True story -
I was very picky in the optioins I wanted. So when it came in, I went to the dealer to inspect it to make sure all the options were there. As I walked around and sat in it, I had a brief thought: "If I get a Mustang, I'd order one exactly like this." Then it hit me
I did!
I guess I had been so used to looking at them for so long on dealer lots, it was just an automatic response.

I went online printed every option I wanted and went to two dealerships looking for it. I found one at the second dealership with everything except the 18" bullits. So I bought that one and a few months down the road got a good deal on the bullits from a fellow TMS'er. Couldn't be happier and I didn't have to wait months. I don't know how those of you that did or are waiting do it. I'd of gone mad.
Originally was going to order. I went to a dealership lot to test drive one and find out more about the ordering process. Wanted the new Grabber Orange and all they had on the lot was black, blue and red. Took out a red automatic and was a little disappointed with it's response. When I came back, the sales guy asked me to come into the showroom so we could discuss ordering. When I walked in the showroom, there she was. A screaming yellow GT with the black stripes! It had all the options I wanted except the heated seats. It was a manual too! They let me take it home overnight and the rest is history.
I thought I was gonna have to order the car, but my local dealer just happen to have what I was looking for. I went in to look at a used Cobra, and came out with a new 07 just the way I wanted it. The car had the options I wanted, and didn't have the ones I knew I absolutely didn't want on the car..... all this the week Ford started offering rebates on the manual transmission 07's back in December.
My typical MO is to go in, find a salesman, point to the exact car I want, and tell them how much I'm going to pay for it. They protest, and I remind them exactly how much they paid for that particular car, how much they're getting in factory-to-dealer incentives, and then even tell the salesman how much he's gonna pocket if I buy the car. I find they are extremely motivated to move cars off the lot, especially in podunk dealerships that don't do a lot of volume, and when all of the work is done for them. I got my current Mustang for well below dealer cost that way.
So, to answer the question, off the lot.

I bought mine off the lot. I didn't really have a choice, as my previous car had been totaled and I needed a new ride ASAP. It worked out well though, I got everything I was looking for, and got the car for a great price since the dealer had over 100 Mustangs sitting on their lot.

I ordered what I wanted from my dealer (yeah, custom ordering is cool) because I couldn't get what I wanted off the lot. I talked to several dealers who all told me "if you want this you'll have to custom order it--these don't just come across our lot". Yes its a V6 but its a fully loaded one with all options and leather seats. I knew what I wanted and made my best deal--3 months later she finally gets delivered
By this time I had lost my patience with the dealer & told the salesman he needed to block off at least an hour for delivery as I was going to give it an extended inspection. Everything was on the car as ordered & I left a very happy Mustang owner

Wow, have times changed...
I bought my 'Vert at the time when they had only been out for a couple of months, and dealers were going NUTS with $10k - $15k ADMs. They flat out would NOT negotiate at all! Their attitude was "if you want it, pay up, otherwise take a hike!"
I found ONE dealership in my area that was willing to order the car and sell it to me for MSRP - and at the time that was a good deal!
So naturally I ordered the car and got it the way I wanted it.
