Despite a tremendous effort, side windows still scratched.

I carry window cleaner and a microfiber window cleaning cloth in my trunk, and never roll down my windows if they are even the slightest bit dirty.
I guess what I didn't realize is that grit can get caught in the felt on the outside of the window...
as such I have a nice scratch right at the top of the drivers glass, on the outside, deep enough to feel with my fingernail.
How the heck can I prevent this??? Do I have to make some kind of tool to clean the felt? I think it got a little stone in it, we were getting 35+ mph winds and there was some grit in the air, may have got it in there. I felt around with my fingers with the window down and seemed to find something...
arghhh.
Went out and checked the car; passenger side outer felt is packed with tiny rocks. Guess I can't roll my windows down anymore! **** car sounded good too.
...OK, I went out with a zip tie and the garden hose. I used the tie to slighty seperate the felt from the window, then sprayed water down into the felt. Cleaned it all up nicely. Filled the door up with water too I'm sure! Good thing there are drains, guess I'll take the door apart once a year to vacuum out the grit!

I don't think adding moleskin to the outside would help much since grit would still get caught in there.
Not sure what to tell you. Never had this problem before, just with the inside ones scratching tint.
