The only other thing I can think of is did you use the cruse control during the trip ?The braking takes the cruse off I belive.
you may have accidently hit resume on the cruse causeing it to idle back up .
Other than that thats my best 2cents worth of guessing

And depressing the clutch also turns it off....

I've had the rev match happen once...thought maybe I blipped the throttle...but my foot wasn't even there yet.

I think the car is haunted

Also, cruise control won't engage unless you are going at least 30 mph. I am sure it is to prevent exactly the sort of thing some of you are proposing, where someone accidentaly reactivates the cruise control after coming to a stop. I can see a very big saftey hazard if your car wants to accelerate to 70 mph from a stop just because you accidentally hit a button.

Boomer.

It happens a few times a week. Doesn't really sound too bad on the engine or anything, so I'm not concerned about it. If it continued to rise past 3000, I would be more apt to have it checked out.

Pete,

Make sure your floor mat is not moving. My co-worker drove his pathfinder through the local donut shop 2 months back. He hit the brake and the mat depressed the gas pedal.

How much is the engine revving? I thought it was normal for the rpm to pick up a little when depressing the clutch; you're temporarily disengaging the engine from the transmission, hence less friction, so the engine strains less. It sounds normal to me, unless it's revving really high. If so, I would think there's cause for alarm.

I've driven manual trans cars, and never seen the rpms continue to rise with the clutch pressed in. Sure they rise some, but not continuously at a steady rate, or as high as mentioned. It really sounds like it might be a programming glitch in the drive by wire system. I hope not, but it's certainly not out of the question, unless it's for emissions reasons.

I am not criticizing anyone. Just saying that stuck accelators doesn't happen.
Actually, they do. I was watching COPS or Worlds Wildest or something just the other day w/ actual footage of a girl traveling down a highway, who called 911 because she could not stop or slow her car down. A state trooper responded to the call and he had to manuver his patrol car in front of her vehicle and used his brakes/car to get hers to stop. Once they were stopped, he instructed her to take it out of gear where the engine proceded to blow when she did so. I don't know what came out of the investigation afterwards, but the girl was scared sh*tless.

EDIT: She also told police and news that "the accerlerator was stuck as if the cruise were on and that the brakes were not responding to stop me."

Well Pete those were my best Guess's the cruse was streching a bit but seeing as the whole system is "drive by wire " and brand new to the stang anything is possible .
Just a note though if it doe's race wildly out of control just turn the key off and get it to the side of the road.I had one car where i was passing someone on the highway and the throttle cable broke with the car almost wide open and climbing,I did not pannic just turned the key off ...put in in neutral and coasted over to the shoulder.
