Clear coat peeling off

Well I took the car into the shop for clear coat peeling away. It might sound odd, but here it is. The grill is apparently rubbing on the top of the bumper, and at that point clearcoat has begun to peel off in large patches down the bumper. I took the car into the dealer, and they said they would take care of it. Well, they call me today and say they can't figure out why it is doing it, and they are just going to have me take the car until they can figure out how to fix the problem so they don't have to repaint the bumper again.

This sounds fishy to me, I think they are trying to weasle out of painting it. It has a CDC classic chin spoiler, so I think they might try to point to that now even though the body shop manager looked it over and said it would be fine. I also have a feeling that when one of my fog lights burned out earlier this year , the tech just pulled the grill back far enough to put the bulb in and with that, rubbed up the bumper and now I have this problem.

What should I do, just wait for them to figure out what is going on? I guess that is about all I can do really.

I think you should ask if they could paint it

They already said they were going to repaint the bumper. They've had the car for 2 days, now they said they are going to "try and figure it out" before they repaint it and I'm going to go pick it up... And now he says that he needs to talk to "the rep" before they can do anything.

well that is odd considering the grille snaps into the bumper. They might want to just get in a new grille, repaint the bumper and then reinstall everything.

The thing is, the way this is designed, you will always end up having the grille rubbing against the bumper a little but it shouldn't cause the clear to peel off. Is the grille actually installed properly?

Well I just got back. We looked at other GT's on the lot, and they were rubbing too just as much as mine was. With that in mind, he said he will just repaint it then and see what happens. Maybe I'll ask him about the grill possibly needing to be replaced then? No idea. But at least it's getting painted.

Sounds like whichever supplier painted the bumper initially did a lousy job. Make sure they prep it really well so the paint doesn't peel off.
