Think twice, Kids will be kids and the temptation is irresistible. Even the most careful teens could get into trouble with peers in the car- wheres the fun in that? I totally disagree with you. This car is NOT for young drivers. Too much car too soon. Remember- how do you know when a teen is lying? answer: when he or she is talking!! (To quote Judge Judy) Sorry if I seem preachy, but I am very adamant. That this is not the appropriate car for a youngster. Please be careful with you son. He is irreplaceable. You are all my Mustang family and I want you and your families to be safe.

First car I learned how to drive stick on was a 78 Celica. Then a year later, I got my 85 Mustang GT (19 then). Seems like such a long time ago.





Thanks John. Funny, Chris has told me on several ocassions that he would like to get a beater for school. He said no way he would take the GT to the school parking lot as it would get vandalized in a hot LA second!

I also appreciate everyone's concern about teens and high HP vehicles. Believe me, I understand it as I was once a teen. I'm a believer of Judge Judy-ism too, however there are always exceptions to every rule. I'm not saying Chris will be a saint 100% of the time behind the wheel, as I'm sure none of us are when driving our Mustangs, but if I don't think he has the level of maturity I expect by the time he gets licensed, he won't get the keys.

Chris has been involved with this car since day 1 (from cleaning, maintenance, and modding). By the time he's of age of getting it, he's been basically a co-owner of it for 6 years. No surprises, nothing new.

Back to what John was saying, this thread was created just to show his first time driving a manual, and with all the learning mistakes that come with it. It's a fun video, that's all.

excellent Bil. My Son who just turned 15 took his turn this summer with my GT. He did ok but we did not have enough time like you did for him to master it. This summer he will master it

This is awesome.

I learned in my dads 97 Hyundai Tiburon in like an hour when I was 14. After that hour he made me drive 15 miles from the parking lot back to our house in heavy traffic during a snow shower.

the words "Don't crash into anything" and "Hey get off of our @$$, he's learning how to drive a stick" still repeat in my head.

I'm glad you didn't chuck him out into the road way.

Needless to say when you start early you learn to appreciate the little things with having a manual transmission. I think starting young with a stick makes for better overall drivers in the long run.

Also I don't see what the big deal is when people use traffic as a reason not to by a stick.

wow bill very very cool...... chris is lucky to have a car savy dad with a bad *** mustang..... i drove an old truck as my real first car but knew how to drive stick.... i was 15 my dad let me drive his 04 z06 WOW what a car that was the car that really taught me how to really drive a RWD with ALOT OF POWER...... chris is very lucky.... i cant wait to share those moments with my son..... i still got a while

Not too many people had video equipment in their houses back in 1962. For sure my family didn't.

I did exactly this (minus the car on his bumper) when teaching my son.
Used a truck loading ramp and a traffic cone with a flag in it.
Waited until he was feeling a little overconfident too.

Now there was some frustration, wish I'd filmed it...

Awesome Tacobill, I can't believe he did those sweet tire scratches at the end of the video. I just turned 15 on November 3rd, but I'm not really sure when I want to drive our GT/CS. I love that car, but for some reason I don't feel so motivated to drive it, probably because I am convinced that I will suck at driving a manual car. I'll definitely let you guys know when I do though.

When I learned how to drive manual it was in a 10 second 700hp car with a OS Geiken triple plate clutch. From personal experience I can say it was difficult then but its great now! I can drive virtually anything, no problem.
