As many of you know, my son Chris (almost 15), will be getting the GT soon. We're talking less than 2 years now of him getting the keys, so it was about time to take him out and teach him how to drive the thing.

Considering the car has a Centerforce DF clutch, 4.10 gears, aluminum flywheel and driveshaft, he did pretty **** good! I'm sure he would've picked up on it alot quicker had it been a Honda Civic, but where's the fun in that?

 

Wish you were my dad. I started off in a green pinto station wagon.

 

Make sure the curfew agreement is notarized.

congrats on a successful trial run...

man I couldnt help but picture things going badly- but he did great

only bad thing about starting out with a Mustang GT. every other car he ever goes to drive is going to really suck compared to it

 

I was the first time I drove a stick...and I didnt have near 400 hp and a heavy clutch to worry about...because the clutch in that was **** near gone

I let my kid pull my GT into the garage, he spun the tires in the driveway. After that he had enough and wants nothing to do with it, at least for now. Don't forget to tie good grade, and listening to mom into the conditions.

I have to side with this too. That's a LOT of HP (and temptation) for a new and inexperienced driver.

I'm in favor of kids getting some miles under their belt in something with a bit more modest performance level before tossing them the keys to something with serious cojones.

You also shouldn't teach kids to ski on a slope called "The Widowmaker"

Heck of a car to start learning in! It was kinda painful to watch it buck... owies... But since he's gonna be drivin' it, he's gotta learn sometime.

I'm sure you've had the 'how to not get in a wreck' and 'how to not let peer pressure get you in a wreck or arrested or whatever' tutorials with the boy, yeah?

My first was a '57 Thunderbird with an auto. That was a special day. My first stick was also my first car, the Orange Bomb, the 1978 Mustang II V6 4 speed hatchback. That was a fun one to learn stick on.

/Still miss that thing, too. Dunno if I'd want one now, but good times... good times.

 

Allowing the kid to drive the HP monster in a parking lot with supervision, is a whole lot better than the kid wanting to get behind the wheel when Dad's not around and the car is in the garage. I didn't see Bill saying that he was turning the keys over so the kid could start driving it to school. Besides, I don't think that's what this thread's about. We should all be able to enjoy a great father-son moment.

 

I learned manual myself on an 87 GT. I look forward to passing my current Stang down to my Son one day. I doubt it will be supercharged, but with great responsibility comes great respect. As long as Chris learns the respect, he will be fine. I'm sure Bill will ensure he's up to driving off alone.

 

Bill is a hero. I learned to drive on a Ford tractor out in a field. I ran over 3 chickens and a water tank before my Dad said "that's enough for today"!
