"The Monte Carlo is capturing part of that market,"
That's funny I pulled up behind a Monte carol and thought to myself
"what are they thinking making a Monte carol that looks like that" but then you must also remember that Pontiac is making a gto that if it had no badges you would think over grown caviler. I guess that's just the GM mentality.

Who’s afraid of Mustang?
Ford's new Mustang may be getting rave reviews, but a key competitor says it isn't worried. Chevrolet marketing director Jim Campbell says the bow-tie division can cover that segment with the four-cylinder, supercharged Cobalt SS and Monte Carlo. "The Monte Carlo is capturing part of that market," Campbell says, pointing out the coupe's success on the NASCAR circuit.

I own both a Monte Carlo SS and a 2005 Sonic Blue GT..
They are cars that appeal to two different markets..
the Monte appeals to those who want a car that will cruise faster and more comfortably than many four door sedans....
The Mustang GT appeals to those who want more power in the traditional muscle car sense. WHile my Mustang can flog my Monte....I still enjoy driving the Monte to work. It is my everyday vehicle while my Mustang is my TOY....

GM is planning on build the Zeta chassis in North America in a few years. The new Pontiac GTO has the "Zeta" chassis from Holden. Hopefully the 07 V-8-powered Pontiac coupe has better styling and less weight.
Until then, the current Pontiac GTO and 06 Solstice will be the closest things GM will have to the new Mustang.

I wonder why he mentioned the Monte and Colbalt but didn't mention the GTO? That's the closest thing they've got to the 'Stang. By the way... is it just me or did they just modify the Grand Prix to re-make the Goat? What's worse... have you seen Chryslers plan to bring back the Charger? They took a page out of GM's book. Page: 1 - Chapter: Fugly.

I agree with what everyone said. I have been a GM faithfull for awhile. But for my first new car I wanted a sports car under 30K. There is only one choice in my opinion, the Mustang GT. The Monte Carlo didn't even enter my mind.

Wow, that was a braniac statement if I ever saw one. Lemme see, I want good old fashion american muscle car. Should I go with the Mustang GT, or the non-existant F Body, or perhaps the grand am/grand prix on steroids. OH WAIT, OMG I CAN GET A MONTE CARLO!!!!

Monte Carlo sales, 2004, 11 months through Nov 30, 2004: 52,578
Mustang 2004 sales, 11 months through Nov 30, 2004: 116,516
#'s are for the US only.
But I imagine that for 2005 Mustang sales will be over 160,000, or 3 times the Monte Carlo.

If that was the case, I wonder why they sold the monte carlo and camaro, and firebird all side by side for so many years.....and the cobalt replaces the cavalier which is obviously a muscle car :notnice:

The monte carlo isn't a bad looking car for GM. Take a look at the rest of their fleet. They still make vans that look like the ones they built in the early 90's.
You can't compare a monte carlo, gto, or any other new car to a 2005 mustang for one simple reason. There are no other affordable rwd sports cars anymore besides the mustang. The mustang is based on affordablity and high performance--not heated seats and GPS. That's what makes it so great.

That guy from GM was just talking crap. There are two guys at GM, both being told to shut up: one guy is telling everyone "I toldya so." and the other guy is saying "It wasn't my idea to can the F-body cars." Mustang in the same class as Monte Carlo? Never. Even back when MC was first introduced. Never. A four banger? Never. The Cobalt is just a two door sporty car: the Mustang, from the ground up is a personal car. Cobalt might go head to head with the Mustang II. GTO" good looks but not retro. The Mustang grags the look of power - even the V6 looks tough. GM wanted too much money for the Camaro and Firebird at the end. Styling was long in the tooth. I've had 3 Firebirds and two Camaros, and in 9 weeks two Mustangs. The -05 is the best of the bunch. I'm done ranting.

Remember, Dodge Neon SRT-4's with only few mods are running head to head with SVT Terminators. They're putting great races. So those SRT-4's vs a 05GT predict the result.

Covering the segment with a supercharged 4-banger? Who are they kidding?

Little off topic but, if I am not mistaken didn't FORD win the Nascar championship oh yah 2 Years running...hum well by that statement by the GM boys one would have to say the Taurus is in the league of Vette. By the Taurus's dominance in Nascar it must be in that category. Nothing against the Taurus but cmon my buddies MONTE couldn't keep up with my truck. The Monte is a nice driving car but no Pony Car and I'm not even going to start with the ricers.
