Check Fuel Cap problem

Check Fuel Cap problem
My wifes 2006 GT is having a problem now with the fuel system. The car now has 13,000mi on it and this problem just started.
It has always been difficult to fill up from time to time, that is not the issue I'm bring up here.
The issue is: the check engine light is lite and the message area reads "check fuel cap". We have gone through 10 tanks of fuel and the message keeps coming back and light continues to stay lite.
The car is going to the dealer this Friday to get checked out.

Have you tried replacing the fuel cap? I just recently had a problem with my other vehicle, a 2001 Exploder Sport Trac, where the Ford locking gas cap I installed went bad prematurely. I re-installed the standard Ford gas cap, reset the codes, and the problem hasn't returned.

Once your check engine light gives the code for a gas cap it can be one of two things: either the cap wasn't tightened securely to at least 3 clicks or the gasket on the cap is going bad. After the light comes on it WILL NOT turn off until it is reset with an OBDII code reader. A lot of people misunderstand this an believe their caps are going bad. If a cap isn't tightened all the way it creates a small leak which will trigger the engine light. Your local Autozone should be able to reset the code for you free of charge... unless you want the dealer to take your hard earned money.
