To Cat ot not to to Cat?

I have the bassani x-pipe with removable cats.
At first I had the straight pipes in with the stock mufflers. You can hear/see a video clip here: http://c5photography.com/MyCar/BassaniX-PipeSoundMovie.wmvBassaniX-PipeSoundMovie.wmv I love the sound.
After a while the smell would get to me. I back into my garage and the garage would smell and it would seep into the house. As far as driving, it was not bad as long as you did not sit at a stop light too long. So if you are in stop and go traffic it can add up. The smell with the hi-flow cats is not bad.
As far as performance, my butt-dyno did not notice a change between the straight pipes and the hi-flow cats. It did quiet down a lot, but not near stock. I can actually hear my wife in the car without her yelling now.
