BON Reports a California Special is Next

California Special, I heard one was supposed to be coming, I'm guessing it won't be too much different than the GT though.
People don't drive without tops in california? (tops... you know... the kind convertibles have) That's kind of strange since to me I've only seen 4 GT convertibles and 3 of them had their tops down and this is Canada.

I'm from Cali and I can't wait. I've been holding out on getting a new Mustang ever since I heard about a possible CS release. I agree with Brad whole-heartedly, it can't be "coupe-only" if they expect to sell any (in Cali at least). I'm sure that's why they didn't sell very well back in '68 and had to turn them into HC's. I'm assuming the CS will be out in '08? Hopefully they've learned something in 40 years. If they come with a vert this time, it's in my driveway....if not, I can wait 'til 2014 for my next Special Edition.

Guess if the C/S is the next special Edition, other SE's are downt the raod - like 3 years (?)

'special' edition when they can just go for simple add ons and graphics.
When the Mustang sales slow down....enough...or Chevy gets a Camaro
then we'll see the next gen SE.
Here's to hoping that Ford goes forward and brings forth a "new" SE
to give us a variant all it's own.

usually SE are brought out to re perk sales(aside from the cobra/gt500) so i dont think ford is in a hurry to get SE's out when they cant build regular editions fast enough for the sales

I personally can't wait for a California Special edition. My dad and I restored one to be my first car, but it turned out nicer than we expected. So it's our show car now.
I have an '05 GT now and couldn't be happier with it, but I would like an '08 California Special to go with my '68. If they do come out with one, it has to be a coupe only, like the originals, none of this 'vert stuff you guys are talking about. If it is a 'vert, then it really isn't paying tribute to days of the old.
Here's a pic of mine.

I personally think it is about time that Ford build a special edition convertible with the GT driveline.
I know the purpose of an S/E is to jump start sales, and convertible sales are usually brisk and limited, but it would add just a bit more media buzz to the Mustang

When I was in the army I was stationed at Ft Ord, lived in Pacific Grove. Given a choice I dont want to live in Cali even though there are some absolutely beautiful places. If the Mustang has California on it, count me out.

Maybe the CS is Ford's way of debuting the notchback coupe Mustang! All California Specials were coupes, not fastbacks.

Personally I think we will see a boss in the future, but who knows when. But CS is just a name. To those of us who know the past of the name, It means alot. But for somebody else who is buying a new mustang it basically means "New mustang? does it look nice?" If it does it will sell. If it doesn't, it will sell to those who know the heritage. You guys may think its a bad marketing idea, but with what ford has been doing with the Mustang so far. I think they'll do a good job with it. But then again, Ford isn't going to make the right decision with the Mustang forever, so far we have been lucky, maybe this will be a bad decision in the end. I personally have faith in Ford. Mostly just the Designers.

I don't care what it's called as long as it has a ductail that's more accurate than what's available now. And sadly the GT500 version looks less like the real ducktail than any of the aftermarket ones.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. California Special would be a sweet name for a mustang with v8-like power and 30+ mpg, offered in california and the various states and countries (canada) that follow california's stringent emissions regulations.
Maybe a v6 hybrid wouldn't satisfy those looking for some accurate heritage, so instead it could be a v8 plus electric motor, giving us supercharged v8 power with maybe 25+mpg??
It'd probably be expensive, but looking at demand for the prius tells you that a hybrid mustang would be off the charts. FIRST HYBRID CONVERTIBLE!!!

that would be cool, as long as you could still get some cool sounds out of the engine. maybe a feature that lets you open it up with just V8 and no hybrid. Maybe the CS with run a brand new engine that works the same like the 300C. 8 cylinders for accelerating and 4 when crusing. that would be a fuel saver forsure and alot less complex than a Hybrid

My guess is that we should see something at the Detroit Auto Show.
I am fine with this CS, as long as it has near 350plus H.P.
My sources at Ford are telling me Boss or GT350. Maybe even another Mach1. We will have to wait and see!

Nice car. But, I have to disagree  I know all CS were coupes, but I'm waiting for a SE vert. A CS vert would be perfect IMO(coupe too). Given its done right.
Ford needs to add more vert options than a V-6/GT/Cobra version
