auto trans filter and flush
I`m over 50k now and ready for a auto trans filter and flush. Any comments from "do it yourselfers" or is this a shop job ? I really like doing any maintenance myself to know its done right.

definately a dealer job.
The tranny fluid need to be put in with a pump.

The most you can do is drop the pan drain what you can then reinstall and use a cheap $20 pump from napa to inject the stuff back in, or you can simply get a top for the trans fluid and squirt it up. Thats pretty much all I did. The only other option is to have a shop do it.

You should not have to change the fluid at 50,000 miles. I have been building the 5R55S for the last six years. If you must change the fluid, reuse the gasket, and make sure you get the correct filter. The filters are different for 05 and for 06 and up. There is a plug on the back of the unit, near the driveshaft. That is the fill plug. The plug on the bottom is for draining and checking the level. Knowing what I know about that transmission, I'm not bothering until 100,000 miles. Lastly, you MUST flush the cooler. Otherwise, you will end up putting a lot of dirty ATF right back in. Ford has the dealers flush the cooler and install an inline filter on the converter inlet side.

We had an 05 V6 in for a transflush. The 1st one at our shop. We use a T-tech machine to flush the system, it hooks up to the trans cooler lines and uses the cars transmission oil pump to do the work. Well this car had hardly any pressure and we could not use the machine. I forgot what we ended up doing.

I`m looking at the first time flush and filter as a good insurance policy for my transmission in the future, like a lot of people do with there first engine oil change at 500 miles. The oil from break in must be full of medal powder. I remember how much was in the pan of my 91 F-150 the first time.
I`m also not impressed with a cooler line hook up and letting it do the job. I don`t beleive you would get a complete turn over of oil. Yet Ford would for the sake of any warrenty concerns have a technique for doing the best job.
Can the torque converter be drained manually? My truck could and when you did it it had a siphoning effect and sucked the cooler dry with it.

ii normally like doing my own work .. (just rotated the tires) but i took it to the dealer for the tranny fluid.. came out to like 90-100 bucks or something like that and had it back in 3 hours. Much like the fuel filter .. il let the dealer be responsible for it. I wont mess with the fuel system or tranny. Definately seemed worth it for 100 bucks. the antifreeze on the other hand..i can handle that

trans fluid and filter change update
My Ford dealer priced me $250 plus tax for this service so I went with an independent transmission shop that I used before for the t-lok install. These guys are top notch and spent all day on it when the aftermarket filter wouldn`t work and they went to Ford for the right one. I was just noticing poor shift performance prior to this change but now its back to normal. Their initial cost was $160 plus tax but ended up $190 when after the flush they used more fluid than anticipated and probably the increase for the Ford filter. He totally assured me that it was a complete system flush and that the fluid level was correct which is a must on this trans.
I am now ready for my spring road trip !
