Here is the wording from the owner's manual: The 5R55S transmission does not have a transmission flud dipstick.
Refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide for scheduled intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not consume fluid. However, the fluid level should be checked if the transmission is not working properly, i.e., if the transmission slips or shifts slowly or if you notice some sign of fluid leakage.
For some reason, I can't seem to find a schedule in my maintenance guide for checking any auto transmission, other than one with a dipstick. :scratch:

The tranny has a bolt on top for checking the fluid level, It is certainly placed in a tough spot to get at, unless you have a lift. Transmission levels with a dipstick are checked with the enigine running, is this still the case without a dipstick?
This is just a guess but I bet they did this because you used to fill the tranny through the dipstick opening and many a mistake may have been made by adding fluids other than transmission fluid.
