Thumbs up

There have been a few reports of rear pinion gear whine during decelleration only. This would be noticeable from approx 50-40 when letting off the gas. The 2005 automatic I test drove a month ago was also making the noise. From what I've read, it is likely in the setup of the rear end pinion gear. Has anybody had their car back to the dealer to have this looked at? If so what, if anything, did the dealer do to correct the problem?

That is exactly what mine did, which is an auto GT. 2 weeks ago took it to dealer who agreed that rear pinion gear was defective probably, or something else in the rear end. They contacted Ford factory for parts and were told that the factory would ship an entire new rear end. The new entire rear axle came in last week and my car has been at the dealer getting it. I get it back tomorrow. Ford also wanted my entire old rear end shipped back to figure out what the exact problem is.

That's good that they want the old one back to look into it. Thank you Ford. Hopefully they'll have it fixed by the time mine gets built. ...Oh wait... now there's a TEMP Hold due to a problem being worked out with the rear end!!! Let us know if the new one fixes or repeats the problem. Good luck with your repairs.

Please keep us updated on the rear end swap results. I'm glad Ford stepped up to the plate and handled this properly by replacing the rear end. I would have been satisfied with the having the gears set up again, if that would have corrrected the problem, but the replacement rear is the ideal solution. I hope your new one is quiet. Maybe the other noisy gears were earlier units and the problem has already been taken care of by the supplier.

Yes, keep us updated on the results of your fix.....and the specs of the 'new setup' if it's different size, material, etc. I have the deceleration whine myself, and I just thought that it was natural sound....but if it's not, then i will want the fix as well, sometime while it's till under warranty.

I doubt I would have noticed it on the one I test drove, since it only occurs on decelleration and within a specific range of speeds. The reason I checked is someone on this forum posted about the noise it a few days before I drove one. It definately is not normal acceptable drivetrain noise.

Im having the opposite sound.

I get a droaning whirring whistle noise on acceleration between 40-80mph

It seems to be getting louder too. Im going to have my dealership take a look at it.

Is that sound coming from the tranny tunnel? I've had that intermittently. My guesses are either throwout bearing, synchros or other Tremec internals. My bet is on the synchros due to the intermittant nature of the noise.

Its constant if im accelerating between 40 and 80 mph quiets a bit after 70mph.

It seems to be coming from somewhere low and to the rear. Passengers in the rear seats have told me its very loud.

Thats about as narrow I can track it down, while driving.

I have an automatic V6 and experiencing the same noise. I wouldn't have thought of it as an issue if It wasn't for reading these threads.

I wonder if it could have anything to do with the 2-piece driveshaft. The connections betweeen the joints are almost like constant velocity joints and the setup is completely different than the SN95 design.

We had the gear whine when decelerating from about 70-40 mph since new. Thought at first it was just new gear mesh noise and would go away after breaking-in the gears and they took a “setâ€.

Took the car in this weekend for 3000 oil change; asked them to test drive it as the gear noise has not subsided as I anticipated.

Apparently the backlash was not set correctly.

B) They have ordered new gears due in Monday afternoon. Taking it in tomorrow morning and will have back Tuesday, mid-morning. They are providing a rental; good dealership experience all around.

Had a semi-loud clunking sound and excessive gear noise upon deceleration. I took it to the dealer and the service manager ordered a new differential. They installed it a couple of weeks ago and now the clunking sound is history and almost all the gear noise is gone. Still has very slight gear noise, when decelerating at approx. 40 miles per hour at times. Only happens when coasting with no brakes. No longer objectionable.

Otherwise, the car is a winner!

I have a 5 speed, and while I didn't really hear a noise I did find a leak under my differential. The leak occured over a couple days of sitting, but was about the size of a small paper plate. I took it to the dealer. My car ended up in the shop a week while they swapped out all new gears in the differential. I had 1,800 miles on it.
