Got this in E-mail and thought others here would find it of interest. Lidio purchased an 05 Auto to test and build up, inside fine his thoughts of what HP the 05 Auto may handle.

Great read. I have been waiting for Bryan to do his supercharger mod and see if his transmission stays to gather. I want to add a 100HP dry nitrous kit to mine and not at all comfortable with the trans.
I will do a wait and see on this for sure. Hurry up Bryan. Your fans await. :worship:

Talking

The article is half right but fails to take into account some progress made on automatics since the C4. My company remanufactures the 5R55S as well as the "W". The "S" is a good bit stronger that you might think. Ford managed to make the unit smaller and lighter but the internals are strong. Bone stock, the S will not take a lot of abuse but the aftermarket carries bands and clutches that address that issue. A simple shift kit is no longer an option. The valve body is elctromechanical and the torque converter is a bit more complex than average. If I were designing a kit for the "S", it would consist of kevlar bands, extra clutches, and a modified solenoid pack.

Good Article,

However, they left out one very importiant change int he 05. There is a new CPU designed especially for the transmission. It also has a new communications link to the main ECU that is 10 to 100 times faster than the old communications link.

This highspeed communications "bus" allowes the engine and transmission to work much closer together than the old system. After reading the difference between the SYNC an NON-SYNC shifting it becomes clear that FORD engineerg upgraded this communications to more precicely regulatey power when doing these SYNC shifts.

After owning the new 05' with the 5sp auto for a while, I am more impressed than ever at its performance. It is impressive that it's shifts just below the red line every time. The shifts are clean, quick and precise. I hate to admit it, but it loses fewer RPM's during the shift than it would if my 40 year old reflexes were driving the gear box.

It will be interesting to see if the auto can match or possbably even exceed the manual mod for mod...

Simply put, I think it is the best stock auto transmission that I have ever driven fom a preformance stand point. I do admit that a manual ratchet shifter would be a nice option...

And yes, the manual is still more fun to drive, but not in heavy Atlanta, GA traffic...
