95 with 5.0 engine
#1
I have a 95 mustang with a 5.0 engine. Been thinking about trading it in. This will help me with the down payment so I can end up with a smaller monthly payment.
Friends have been telling me not to get rid of it because of the 5.0 engine. They tell me that later down the line this engine will be a collectors item and will greatly increase the value of the car. Is this true?? and if I decide to trade it in what would be a fair price to get for it from the dealer.

Oh, Lord have mercy. . .
The engine will be a Collector's Item???
The 5.0 is the 302 V8. Ford has been building the 302/5.0 since, uh, 1968? 1969? By the hundreds of thousands?
Unless there's something quite remarkable about the iron inhabitant of your engine bay, I would question the high collector value for the engine.
Is your beloved Mustang exquisitely detailed? Show car? Could you eat off the engine surfaces but don't because it might stain them? Unless you are answering yes to all of the above, I would not be too worried about the "collector value" of the power plant.
Other thoughts, gang?

It could be worth something someday if it has low miles as it was the last year for the 5.0 in the body style. I would suggest selling it at the dealership as a trade in because then you get a tax break off of your new pony for the ammount they will give you for your trade. Tell me exactly what you have, miles, year, transmission and how its loaded and I will give you a rough estimate of what a normal dealership would call your trade. After all, its what I did for a living.

That's what I figured, but wanted to get some feedback before I made the move to get rid of it. Nothing remarkable about the car except the good memories and the fun I've had with it. THANKS

Your friends are, well, let me put it nicely... undereducated and underinformed.
There is nothing rare about the 302/5.0. It's not like we're talking about an original BOSS 302 engine, or a 427 Cammer, or.... it's a massed produced engine.

I wouldn't recommend trading it in. I work at carmax and due to the age of the car it would go straight to auction...meaning you get wholesale value. With the mileage you have on it you could definetley sell it for alot more by yourself.

I do not know about your friends education, however, I do believe that the car will be worth more someday than it is now. Just hang on to it. I believe that there is something rare in a 302 especially since that was the last year. As long as it is in good shape and the miles are decent. It is always going to be worth more than one that has 100,000 miles and junky.

I sold a 95 last year that I only kept for a few months to save for the 2005. I purchased it from the original owner and it had never been in an accident. You'd be suprised how desirable the 5.0's are over the 4.6's for people that want to mod the car. I'd definately run an ad on autotrader.com and see what kind of responses you get. I used "last of the 5.0's" in my advertising, and got quite a few responses. You're not going to get very much for it on a trade in, but I'd check kbb.com and see what it is going for just to see what to expect.

You should be able to sell it for a good price. There are guys out there who want the 5.0 because its easier to mod for drag racing, etc. The car would be worth something down the road because it was the last year for the 5.0, but you would need to stop driving it now and it has to be in excellent condition and stay that way. If you can afford it, then keep it, but have someplace to put it. Leaving it outside is not the thing to do. I've seen many cars rott away because some owner said "someday I'm going to restore it" and it just sits there, outside, uncovered and becomes a rust pile.
