I'd rather go turbo with my current motor for less money.

I knew a 5.0 crate motor wouldn't be that expensive. When the 05-09 cars are dirt cheap in a few years and the 5.0 is more readily available there will be some good hot rodding material.

Definitely want to put one of these in when my 4.6 blows up

Anyone know if the TR3650 is a direct bolt-up, or is the MT82 needed?
Edit: Bellhousing mount common to 4.6L engines!!!!

I agree with you.

If people really want a 5.0, get a stroker kit plus a turbo/supercharger will cost less than 7K, running more boost than what the new engines allow. I just don't see the "cool" factor about spending north of $7K for an engine that can't handle as much boost as our 4.6 05-10 engines.

I don't see the point of a retrofit. Too much $$$ for less performance than if we invested the same $$$ in our engines.

A 5.0 swap would be pretty cool, but i'd like to see the cost of the 5.4. At that point, maybe consider a larger blower or at least change the pulley and add supporting modification to it. Either way in the end, the wiring is what's going to be the longest/hardest part.

I'm going through a GT500 swap now.

The wiring isn't too bad as long as you get a harness.

It does cost though... the GT500 ECU is quite pricey.

I would imagine a 5.0 swap would likely be similar, but who knows.

You might need to get both a body and engine harness for that plus an ECU which would probably cost a lot more than anyone would want to pay.

The big problem, that I see anyway, with a 5.0 swap is what you're getting.

At the end of the day you have a motor with a higher compression (low or no boost) and internals that are non-forged.

So I don't really see the point in it.

The stock GT powerplant (4.6) could easily reach the 5.0 power level with a blower. And if you built the 4.6 (and stroked it to 5.0 as some have mentioned) you'd have a MUCH better motor with MUCH more potential, and you wouldn't have to screw with swapping the ECU harness etc.

The 5.4 swap makes a whole lot more sense to me... obviously

Some of us that want to build road race cars (and we're probably in the minority) don't want the added weight of a blower and intercooler assembly on the front end of the car.

Then again, you would do better keeping the 4.6 and building it into a stroker motor.

You could have a 4.6 stroker and make more power than the 5.0 (and it would still be a 5.0 after you stroked it) and you'd have much better internals to boot.

But hey it's your check book

I would suspect a lot of people want it for the "cool" factor... I just don't have that kind of cash laying around for the sake of being "cool"

I'm with 06GT here. The 5.0L is a very nice fat trimmed DOHC engine that revs quickly with efficiency and power. The modern day hot rod engine. I can't justify the cost yet but the 5.0 is in it's own league. The new 5.4L is an awesome power plant as well but for the balanced performance, the 5.0 is the way. Doubt I'd do the swap but it's a cool idea and would look great in a 32 Roadster. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: I do agree that the 4.6 has a lot of potential in it, especially when treated with well balanced parts. Even still, the 5.0 will be more efficient.

So a bit cheaper than the estimated $15k fro the engine. Now they need to release what the cost for the rest of the stuff is. Though I'm still going to wait until someone wraps one around a tree and ebays the engine.

I am curious who or what source quoted a $15000 engine cost estimate previously. Comments? Thanks!

That's the point I keep arguing!!! for 7K, you can get a stroker and a supercharger and have a better performing car!

What do you mean efficiency?

I don't know about the engine being in its own leage, it's a high compression engine that won't allow you to run big boost numbers. I guess if you look at it from that stand point, it is in its own league! he he he

You can't change the cams without giving up a kidney (due to cost), you can't run high boost, internals are not forged... Interesting efficiency...

Does the $7K include wiring harnesses and the computer? And how much is the labor to install one of these? Also, nobody answered the question on whether it can be used with our transmissions, so if it can't, there might be some money to be spent there (6 speed transmission and driveshaft). That might add to the $7k price tag. I think there's another at least $4K buried in that $7k before it can actually be used in a 05-09...

You can stroke the 4.6 but a stroker would probably be my LAST choice for a road race engine.

The you should probably buy that 5.0 engine and pay the 10k or more to have that extra 100 hp.

Obviously that's the only way you'll get to your power goals yes?

Again not my money but I sure as hell wouldn't do it.

I don't know what I'll end up doing but it's on the list. Building the 4.6 is also another option, but I like the idea of factory reliability and not having to second-guess if I put the motor together correctly or if I got the best power combo.

I'm going to be waiting a year till they are more common, I bet you'll see full front clips with the trans for under 5k off a car that's been wrecked.
