This was an interesting review of the Shelby GT. The STi looks like a radical ride at $38k.

Jeez, was gonna post some comments on there, but Youtube has a 500 character limit on comments No wonder it attracts a bunch of asshats

I posted a brief comment myself. Everything is a price comparison these days.

I ordered a STi brochure. I've been interested in Subarus for awhile, and it would make a decent daily driver. The only thing I don't like is that it uses a belt for its valvetrain (Ford modular V8s use chains).

that sti is hidious! a hatchback sleeper..cmon. if we bought mustangs soley on performance numbers, i would have never bought mine. i'd be in one of those fugly gto's. the mustang is the complete package..looks, performance, modability (the ability to mod...don't know if its a real word yet...), price, comfort, handling, and the chicks dig 'em. until the challenger comes out, there may be a car thats better on this or that but as a whole there's no competition! ....well until that dam challenger comes out..then wait for the road tests...i love the way everone compares their cars to the benchmark!...did i mention that dam challenger!

The Shelby v. StI report is not very thorough. Although the narrator was quick to point out that the Shelby was heavy, slow, and so forth, he forgot to mention the fact that Subarus are pretty expensive to service, and the fact that the Mustang is MUCH safer. Another point that was missed was the fact that the StI is pretty much maxed out- there's not much more you'll get out of the "driver's car," whatever that means, but the Mustang has a lot more in it if you pop on a blower or turbo, not to mention headers, heads, etc. The Subie's styling, if you can call it that, is globular at best, while the mustang has a distinct profile. This is important to true "car people," and even the average person, as they are more apt to recall a vehicle with memorable lines, like the Mustang, over something like the Subaru. It's not like anyone talks about the "good 'ol days" in someone's Subaru Brat, rather, they are more likely to recall something like a 'Vette, or a Mustang.
Now then, I'm sure the Subaru is a blast to drive- but if you are wide of shoulder-or round of belly- the Subaru may be a bit of a squeeze, thus subtracting from the driving experience. I drove the latest VW GTI, and believe me, when someone says "driver's car," they are referring to a VERY firm ride, overpowered brakes, and an uncomfortable experience, if not an exciting one. However, this exitement will wane over a short period of time, and then the realization hits that a "driver's car" doesn't work in traffic. During rush hour. In a snowstorm. Or blazing heat. At all.
Finally, I think it must be said that the best test(s) for seeing how good an enthusiast's car is is simple. Do you turn heads, and get compliments wherever you go, and which car would your spouse, girlfriend, etc., rather be picked up in? Something that looks like the pizza guy's hatchback...or, the Mustang? Food for thought.

I just started comparing the Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited, although it is going to be a bit slower (low 14s bone stock) than a S197 GT, it offers a sunroof and all the amenities at about the same price as a stripper S197 GT. The great part about Subaru's is the symmetrical AWD drivetrain. The Mustang is fun to drive but I've had it with RWD in deep snow/slush.

It's a good one, I smiled the whole time the first time I saw it. It resembles me on the way to the gym sometimes.
