Thumbs up

Hey I have been reading for a while and I am a tech guy who will 99% likely get a Mustang GT in the future but when I happened to surf the net I saw this.......

six speed auto for RWD fords

I know it is a bit out of date and was wondering if any one had any updates or any thoughts at all about this as I would hate to but the 5 speed auto and then find out that it was only a temp band aid and from 2006 on they use the six speed auto as then the 5 speed 2005 mustang people will have less options for modding their cars....

Elias

Thanks for any positive constructive input!

My wife's S Type 4.2 Jag has the 6 speed auto. Great tranny, car is very strong once it launches. Unlikely you will see it in a Stang.

For a sports car with such a racing following and high demand for manual trannies, I would think a six speed stick to come before a six speed auto. But who knows. This is a really old article, and plans change.

Doing a little research on the web for info about FOMCO's 6-Speed investment and here's what I found.

V6 Auto on Automobilemag.com

Wards Auto World

GM & Ford Get Approval to work together on Auto-6

It looks like Wards Auto is the originator of the rumors... But with the FTC giving official approval for both Ford & GM to work JOINTLY on a new 6 Speed Automatic it sounds like a sure thing.

One of the articles notes production capabilities of 1 Million units by 2008... So I'm guessing if it happens the Stang would see it in 2007.

Edmunds auto -- Ford 500Hey I wanted to update people as I spent a little more time and found this tid bit that was in the truck section of ford but if you read it you will see why I think this is an importan5t clue.

Six speed auto trans part 2

here is a clip for people who just cant find the strength to click...

“We are putting an intense focus on transmissions at Ford Motor Company. With the introduction of a new TorqShift 5-speed automatic, CVTs in 2004 and soon after new rear-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive 6-speed automatics, we expect that 50 percent of our transmission lineup in North America will be all new by 2008.
– Phil Yuhasz
Chief Engineer, Automatic Transmissions
any thoughts or anyone want to help me dig out any newer info?

Elias

edit-- just wanted to add this link which shows the ford 500 which can be had for the same price as a Mustang GT has a ford 6 speed auto so I do not think it is that unlikely --

I would drop some extra bills to get a 6 Speed Automatic. Although it may not be around until 2008. I don't know if I can wait that long

The Ford / GM joint 6 speed transmission is for FRONT wheel driver vehicles (and AWD vehicles based of FWD type vehicles). You will NOT see this trannie in a Mustang.

However rumors are that Ford has licensed the 6 speed trannie for RWD vehicles (as used in the S-type) and will have a Ford built version of the 6 speed ZF in a few years.

Licensing or buying a 6 speed for the Cobra or SE's makes a lot of sense.
