2005 Mustang brake/steering advice

Hi Everyone,

Would really appreciate if someone with experience could help out with the following issue.

I have a 2005 V8 convertible and I upgraded the brakes to the 6 piston brembo from a 2013 GT500.

I'm looking for the stainless steel brake hose (brakes still feel sluggish) and after researching this website, I believe the following part would work?

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/RUS-693380/applications

Has anyone use these before? Are they any good?

Also, im trying to upgrade my steering wheel to the newer version with radio controls from the 2013 models.
Do I need any specific adapter or something to get the buttons to work? (My radio head unit is an Atoto S8).

Thank you so much!

First off welcome to the the fourm.
Russell brake lines are awesome. You won't have any issues with them.
As for the steering wheel. There is a thread here by akdoggie where he made a pdf explaining how to get that steering wheel working with our cars. We helped with testing and whatnot. Also make sure you have the correct left side buttons for the wheel.

if those huge brakes still feel "sluggish" (soft?) then there is probably some bigger issue than rubber lines .... first thing is to do a real good bleed on the system

also did you bed in the new pads?

Hi VGMStudios,

Thank you for the welcome and for the advice! i'm based in Germany and shipping is really expensive. Wanted to make sure there are no issues before placing the order.
I've just placed the order for the following:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-693380
(Russell Street Legal Brake Line Kits 693380)

Hopefully it fits perfectly!

Thank you! I was reading a few articles regarding installing the new steering and getting the buttons to work. I think I'll need the following 2 adapters?
  • 2 WPT-440s
  • PAC SWI adapter

Am I missing anything else?

Thank you Bert, I'm planning to change the oil and do a full bleed on the system once I've installed the new hose. Pads are from the old donor car.
My other car is a... Mazda MX-5 (I know the bad rep it gets in USA), and I'm running EBC Yellow stuff on it. Would you recommend EBC Yellow stuff for the Mustang too?

Thanks again!

I am not familiar with EBC Pads; I have used Carbotech because they offer compatible street and track-only pads ... hopefully someone else will chime in.

Pads need to be bedded to the rotors; if that was done by prior owner (you bought used rotors, calipers, pads all together) then it should not need to be done again.

Nothing wrong with Mazda MX-5 for me, they have a huge following here, they even have a special racing class that is very popular, called "Spec Miata"

I second the bedding in process. I switched to Z23 pads on my 08 GT, and while somewhat involved, bedding them made a huge difference with the slotted and drilled rotors. Much better feel then the stock semi metallic pads, and very little dust, which helps with keeping the wheels cleaner.

Do NOT follow that guide for the steering wheel. You do NOT need a PAC module in order to get the steering wheel to work.
As I mentioned before, use Akdoggie's guide here in this forum. Here it is.
https://themustangsource.com/forums/...o-mods-528705/

There is a Pdf at the end of his post. Also make sure you have the correct audio buttons for the wheel. There are 2 versions. If you go through the thread you'll find out which ones are needed. I don't remember off the top of my head.

If you have any questions lmk. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the reply! Apologies for the late response, got back to Germany and been having too much fun with the car.

@Bert Are MX-5s considered a girly/hairdresser car? I was given so much flack by my friends in the States for driving one!

Regarding the bedding, I think it shouldnt be an issue, the rotors and pads are indeed second hand. I have actually been thinking of buying new rotors next year. Probably a 2 piece rotor that is lighter?

@VGMStudios
THank you! the PDF was really helpful, I'm still totally lost but should get better once I actually start the project.
RIght now, I'm hunting down the 2x WPT1242 connectors. These are the only things I'd need right? Unfortunately they're out of stock almost everywhere except Tascaparts (bad reviews). Even Carid does not have them in stock. I'm trying to get them delivered to my colleague before Friday (he is coming over ot Germany this weekend).

Am I missing anything else?

One other thing I forgot to mentioned is, I've absolutely zero handbrakes! The mechanics in Germany tried changing everything and cant figure out whats wrong. One problem at a time I guess.

You are most welcome.
Looks like KC beat me to it. I was going to post the rockauto link.
Other than that please make sure you have the correct right buttons for the steering wheel. There are 2 versions.
The process can be a bit confusing. I know I was so lost at first when I started the project and reading the pdf.
So if you have any questions about it let me know and I will help you out. But first find those 2 WPT1242 connectors. You'll also need some wire and female pin connectors for the radio connector.

Hey guys, thanks so much!

I actually found the one from RockAuto last night but this is the thing I'm a bit confused about.
They've 1 in stock under Wholesaler Closeout.
Under their regular inventory, it doesnt say how many in stock. If I were to buy 1 from each section, would they deliver at the same time? The one under the wholesaler closeout has 30 days warranty. (warranty doesnt really matter since I'm in Germany and it wouldnt make sense to return it).

Should I just go ahead and order it from them?

@VGMStudios
Thanks! I checked the steering and it looked exactly the same as the one from the PDF. I'll try to attached some pics in a bit.

Yikes, guess my reply didnt go through.
Thanks everyone!

Should I just buy one from their wholesaler closeout and 1 from their regular inventory? Is it safe to assume that they actually have stock in their regular inventory? (the quantity isnt stated) Warranty isnt too important for me since I'm in Germany.

@VGMStudios
Thanks! I've compared pics of the steering with the one from the PDF and they seem exactly the same. I'll try to upload some pictures later

Yes It Looks Like You Can Get One at a Discount and One at Regular Price. That's How I'm Reading It. I Imagine if there is an Issue it Will Tell you at Final Checkout. You Could Also Purchase Generic Standard Motor Products One if Needed! Add the Discount One Then Go Back A Page hit Dropdown for Regular Price One and add to cart.

I think I fixed your Posts as Well!

Awesome! Thanks!

I've just ordered both the cables and hopefully with express DHL delivery, it'll reach Texas by Thursday!
If all goes smoothly, I'll start on this Project on the 20th!

Also thanks so much for the parking brake TSB.
When the garage was trying to fix it, they snapped one of the cables and I had to replace one cable and the entire handbrake assembly. I'm hoping by replacing the second cable it'll fix the issue.

@VGMStudios these are the pics of the steering, it looks exactly the same, so hopefully there wont be issues?

Okay great. Thanks for the picture. It looks like you have the correct buttons so that's great!
I was going to say that you can always put things in your cart on rockauto and go to the checkout page to see shipping options and when everything will arrive.

I was also going to give you a discount code but you already bought them. Hopefully they will arrive soon.

Wow they snapped the cable and you had to replace it? That doesn't sound right. They should have replaced it!
I don't understand why you would have to replace the entire parking brake assembly. That's an expensive fix!

When building the harness for the steering wheel make sure you have some of these. For example :
https://canada.newark.com/molex/3301...imp/dp/39M4524

If you have an spare connector with these in it then you should be all set.

Just for later reference. WPT440 is the same as WPT1242 Motorcraft. Standard S1891 is the same item and RockAuto has plenty of the SMP connectors.

@akdoggie @VGMStudios

First of all, happy thanks giving and thanks so much for the help!

Just got all the parts from the states and have been playing around with the wiring.

Good News:
1) Got the Steering installed and managed to get the Cruise Control to work.
(it only works once I'm in third gear)

Bad News:
1) The buttons are blue! It really, REALLY bothers the heck out of me since I'm trying to keep everything neon green inside . hopefully I can reset the colours?
2) Guys, maybe I'm really dumb, but I've read page 3 of the manual atleast 5 times but after each reading, I get even more confused.
Is there a video or something I could watch? Basically, I'm stuck getting the Radio Controls to work.

Just so I didnt miss anything, right now, the cruise control works, I had to cut the cable head from the old steering and wire it to the new steering. I've 2x WPT1242 for the radio controls.
(Not sure if this is relevant but my radio is an Atoto S8 Pro).

What are you confused about specifically? When I first did it I was very confused so I know what you are talking about. If you can tell me what is confusing you I'll be able to help more.
Btw I'm in Canada and my turkey day is in October.
As for the steering wheel button colours, you can change them but you'll need to solder new ones in. They are a light blue colour. I didn't like it either as my colour scheme is blue so I soldered in new LEDs.
