...A similar example is changing the oil...sure you are suposed to change it every 3K-5K miles, but the engine will still crank for quite a bit longer. It's not a good idea, however...
Not actually true, there have been oil analysis done in labs with samples of oil when its been used for 5000 miles and it still was able to go for another 2000 or so miles.

For example this guy tested his oil at 5200 miles and the lab says he can go longer with it due to still having active additves left.

Ok, it seems as though you have missed the point, but accidentally have provided information to further prove it.

My point was that just because someone says "You should change your tires every 6 years regardless of tread wear" doesn't mean that the tire will disintegrate or become unsafe at the 6 year mark. The other point was that just because they are only now saying does not mean it was previously untrue.

Then again, it may be a huge marketing scam.

Forget the tires, I'm talking oil. I know you're comparing them but that's like apples and oranges. It IS a good idea to go past 5000 miles on certain brands of oil, look at Amsoil for example.

With this statement: "The other point was that just because they are only now saying does not mean it was previously untrue."..... you totally lost me?

BTW, who recomends changing tires every 6 years, thats insane. The average tire life span is about 25000 to 30000 miles. You split that into 6 years and you're only driving 5000 miles a year!!

Ford is making the tire recommendation. Due to all the tire studies they have done from the Firestone fiasco, they have determined that it would be beneficial to not use a tire for more than six years regardless of the number of miles.

Yea I almost died laughing when I read that on cnn or whereever last Friday. Next they will say change your engine and tranny every 10,000. Why not just make the tires last like they used to?? It has to be a CYA liability thing in case another round of bad tires comes around so they can say "we told you so"

You wouldn't believe some of the tires I've seen on cars. Cracks all in the sidewall and tread, rubber so old it's hard as a rock just to name a few. Then thrown in all the oblivious folks driving around with about half the recommended pressure in their tires. I think Ford is just trying to make sure they don't pay for something that's not their fault again.

My understanding 1st of all is that the recommended miles for a change of tires is 30-40,000 miles. With that said it also depends on how you drive. I had mine changed in my 2000 Stang at 50,000 miles with some pretty good tread left on them. Now when it comes the lenth of time of a tires, no matter how good the the amount of thread, this is my 1st to hear such a recommendation. However, it make sense depending where you car is parked. If you car is never garaged and in the sun at all times I am sure the tires life will decrese sooner than averege due to cracks.
