What will work?

I have a 1998 mustang gt I am getting rdy to start building. It seems like the first place to start would be the heads and cams. I would like to get a set of PI heads and intake and start with a good set of cams. I know that 1999+ mustangs have those heads but what I was wondering was that the only vehicle from those years that those heads would work? I mean as long as they are Windsor and SOHC will crown vics and f- 150's, etc.work?

Romeo or windsor would work. Romeo are better heads.

A lot of the newer vehicles had the pi heads on them. Romeos are the better head an seem to be more plentiful far as finding them. Windsor only made mustang heads from 99 to early 01 if I'm not mistaken an the rest are Romeo. You'll need a pi intake and stuff to as well to make the swap

As far as I know, F150's, Crown Vics and such will work. I think the big difference is in the intake (which is part of the PI swap) so you want to get and PI intake from a 99-04 Mustang.

I could be wrong but Im pretty sure on this.

Definitely have to have the intake to do the swap. You can tell if its a pi intake or not by lookin at the bottom of the intake. It'll be a lot deeper than non pi. If its still on a car an you want to kno if its pi of not then the first cross on a pi intake is on the driver side an non pi is on the passenger side. Those intakes are known for cracking so if your looking to invest in a swap id hit up American muscle an get a full aluminum intake! Some f150s did have the pi 4.6 as well as several others and I believe 1999pony is right on thinking they will work

I picked up a set of rebuilt pi heads from a ebay vendor. They looked and operated like new. Cost was 600 bucks

Thanks for the info. I just got a sweet deal on a typhoon intake for a 99-2000. pfs-54060. Now I need to get the heads. I am debating on just running this intake until I get the money to do it right. by that I mean port the pi heads and little more aggressive cams etc.how Much would that intake alone give me for hp and will it work.

Why are the Romeo heads better?

Imo the romeos are better not for performance reasons but for upkeep and minor things. Windsors have pressed cam gears an and romeos are bolt on. I like that it bolts on but that's just my opinion from having messed with both of them. (timing) I have read that the romeos seal better but haven't had problems with either head on that so I don't kno. Windsors also only made the mustangs engines in 99 an 00 an the rest has been on Romeo so that makes the Romeo much more plentiful an easier to find

Romeos also arent as prone to spark plug blow outs and have a better cam cap design as well. Windsor and romeos are said to be the same hp levels but from all the cars i have had the romeo motors seem to make better power

Actually the spark plug is prone to happen to either. Mine (Romeo) did this on cylinder #2. But it has also been traced back to several instances where the cylinder was running lean. Causing expansion due to out of norm heat levels. In my case my injector was causing a lean condition. Romeo heads or still IMO a better head than the Windsor head.
