Tranny Resistance

I have recently noticed an increased level of resistance when shifting my 2000 Mustang GT through the gears. It has also become increasingly difficult to grab first/reverse from neutral without pumping the clutch again. Overall the shifts feel a bit more sluggish. Is this simply a clutch cable adjustment issue or is it more the character of a disintegrating clutch? I'm not too hard on the car by any means, but I'm at about 80k on the odometer with what I have been told is the original transmission set up. Thoughts and suggestions are tremendously appreciated!

Thanks,
Alexei Wise

Either clutch cable or clutch. I would change the cable first and see if that fixes the problem, then move onto the clutch.

Adjust your cable first.

Maybe someone can post up a link on how to, I would but I'm on vacation and Internet is limited.

It's not that hard but it difficult to get to, if your a bigger person I would take the seat out.

Thanks all! This really helps a lot. Hope it's just that cable!
I'll let you know once I get a closer look.

Update:
Tried to adjust my clutch cable at the firewall (steeda firewall adjuster) but was unable to get more than a quarter turn in either direction and neither improved the resistance when trying to get the car into gear. Am I simply trying to adjust this incorrectly? Please forgive my ignorance with this part! This part was installed prior to my ownership of the vehicle.
Thanks!

There should be a set screw iirc. Adjust it to were you think it will be good and tighten the set screw and see what you think. The set screw should keep the adjustment where you want it.

Problem is there is no screw! And no matter how hard I try and turn it, the adapter won't rotate more than 1/4 turn

Hmm. I got rid of my steeda adjuster a couple years ago for a maximum motorsports piece, but I know my steeda wasn't ever to terrible to adjust. I wasn't easy, but you didn't have to put a whole lot of effort in the adjustment.

I truely at a loss. It shouldn't be that difficult to adjust.

Have not replaced anything at this point. Not sure if the cable is original or aftermarket but my guess is that it's aftermarket because I also see a steeda clutch quadrant bellow my dash. I could be mistaken but I think the current cable was included in an American Muscke kit or something similar

I had the steeda and it stretched after a couple years. Didn't last nearly as long as the oem ford. That could be why you can't adjust anything.

This is what you should get. I would replace your cable first before anything.

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely look into that. Is it absolutely necessary to replace the firewall adjuster and clutch quadrant as well? Mine appear to be in good shape but are they less compatible with the maximum motorsports cable?

I'm pretty sure you need to replace it all. The mm one is designed specifically for the oem cable whereas the steeda one isn't. That was my understanding when I changed mine.

Okay that makes sense, thanks.
How satisfied are you with your new set-up? Also, does the MM cable have comparable life expectancy and wear tolerance to the stock cable?

The mm cable is a stock cable, so the best you can get. I like it. Its pretty much the same as the steeda, but the cable was what I was really focused on having.

Very useful info. Thanks for the input! Looks like that's what I'll try. I'm pretty sure that will take care of my troubles.
Thanks again!
