can anyone acutally explain why magnaflows make more power than flows? Is it the internals of the muffler? I'm just curious...
Well with the best pictures I can find, here is the difference. Flowmasters are chambered. Meaning they are hollow, but have walls inside them that make the exhaust manuveur through different "chambers" within the muffler. giving it its signature sound, but also makeing the exhaust work more in order to exit the muffler. The first pic is a flowmaster cut-away.

Now this is a pic (sorta) of a magnaflow muffler. The easiest way to explain it is, that metal tube with the holes in it goes STRAIGHT through the muffler. The exhaust has one single path it goes through, no turns or pass throughs. The sound is absorbed by the sound deadening matieral on the outside of this tube. I've heard that magnaflow uses some sort of volcanic matieral in their mesh that helps produce its sound and also last longer.

See how there can be a power difference in the mufflers? Its all about exhaust path and speed.

I've had them both on GTs ans Mach 1s. The FlowMasters' drone and interior vibrations get old real quick. They are perfect for getting noticed and for needing hearing aids. They su&k big time.

Great pictures. Then the question should be, why is a flowmaster better than stock? Or is it? I heard Flowmasters and liked the sound, but I am changing my mind with the help of this forum. On the edge, push me over. B)

honestly most people dont see any gains from just a cat-back. The biggest gain is from ditching the 4 catalytic convertors in the mid-pipe. Swapping to an o/r X pipe will net the most gains on a 4.6L. I've heard quite a few 4.6L gt's and cobras taht with a Dr Gas or VRS x-pipe and the stock cat-back, sound quiet at idle and cruise, but sound amazingly good at WOT.

I though Flowmasters Delta series of mufflers was suppose to reduce the drone and interior resonance that everyone is complaining about. Has anyone heard them or have them on their car? How do they compare to the Magnaflow?

as far as sound, check out http://www.mustangexhaust.com

Personally I think every flowmaster is going to drone to an extent. The only thing that is not going to drone is stock untouched exhaust (cat-back, headers and mid-pipe). Now my magnaflows with teh o/r H-pipe do drone some, but nothing like a flowmaster. I can still hear myself think

i'm a huge magnaflow fan for the 4.6, but not so crazy about them on the 5.0 it's too exotic sounding.

Some people think Quantity is better than Quality, I however prefer a quality sound over the quantity of it. But keep in mind he is talking about a 5.0, not the 4.6 and magnaflows sound a lot different on 5.0s (imo, not very good).

I'll admit, that I dont normally like magnaflows or x-pipes on a 5.0 car, but 95gtman's sounds good (if its the same 95gtman i'm thinking about). Also a friend of mine has the magnaflow catt'd X and magnaflow cat-back on his 94 gt vert and it sounds good.

I have 40 series Flows on my otherwise stock 98 GT. The sound is good, not too loud even when you open it up. But there is a drone at 2k rpm, although it's livable since the rest of the exhaust is stock.

I went with 40 series Delta-Flows on my 66 and the drone is greatly reduced - course with Try-Y headers, an H-pipe and no cats, it's LOUD. But it's supposed to be...

I've heard the Magnaflow catback on a friend's 360R, and I will be using them instead of Flows next time I need new exhaust on a new model.

I just installed new MAC catbacks on mine (black hth coated with 3" stainless tips). They sound really good with the stock H. Well then a friend of mine in our local Mustang club decides to sell his 1 month old Magnaflow Cats that have the Magnapacks and 3.5" tips. He wants 200.00 bucks for them so I guess I'll be selling my not even week old MAC catback with 100 miles on it in the next week, lol!!!

My Magnaflows sound great. Loud, but not too loud, and no drone at any speed.

If you are doing an exhaust first look at what you wanna go with. If you go with an xpipe set up then you wanna go with a straight through muffler magnaflow, dynomax, borla ect. If you go with a hpipe then you wanna use a chambered muffler flowmaster, mac ect. My buddy has a 03 cobra with a bassani xpipe and magnaflow catback it sounds great. Its a little bit raspy but still doesnt have the 2000-2500 drone of flowmasters. If I were doing an exhaust again I would do a mac prochamber with magnaflow cat back.
