I've been reading many of the mustang forums for quite some time. When I first got out of college I bought a 2000 Silver GT coupe. I loved the car, but traded it in on a truck during the first bad winter. I should've just eaten the extra cost and bought a winter beater. After paying my truck off I couldn't wait to get another mustang. My original plan was to buy a new GT convertible this summer, but I came across this car and couldn't turn it down. Its a 2001 silver cobra coupe with only 20,000 original miles. I bought it in December across the river in WV for a great deal - $16,200 was the final negotiated price. I found they were going for about 2-3K more on ebay with the same mileage. I figured with this price I will also be able to afford some mods.

When I bought the car the only modification I could find was a set of Eibach pro-kit lowering springs. After some research I found these would have been the springs I would have chosen - not super agressive or stiff, but rather a middle of the road sport spring. Love the handling, but found the shocks were still factory. I've since installed Bilstein Cobra R spec shocks on the rear and am waiting for the fronts to come in from Summit racing. They should be in this weekend.

Another modification I've done is installing the predator tune. I really wanted some kind of tool to run basic diagnostics and pull info from the sensors, the tune was a great bonus in addition to the trending and data capabilities of the tool. It added a good power increase.

Tommorrow, I have an appt at Dyno Tune motorsports in Columbus, OH. I hope to get a baseline dyno without the tune and then with the tune to see actually how much power the tuner adds and to establish a baseline before I begin to mod.

More posts and lots of questions to come..............

Welcome to the board. Please let us know how hte baseline does and the tune. I've worked with Doug from Bamachips.com before on some 01 cobra's and they just didnt want to respond to any type of tune he threw at them. If you can, get a dyno graph with both runs so we can see the difference, i'm highly curious.

I had my dyno tune yesterday. Unfortunately, I've been traveling and am not near a scanner to post the dyno numbers yet. I will be back in the office on Monday. We ended up doing three pulls. The first two were with the Predator tune and the last was with the stock tune. Much to my surprise and the owner of the dyno the predator tune gave almost no performance increase. Both tunes were targeting air/fuel ratio throughout the rev range of 12.5. The predator tune did increase the timing about 5%, but the knock sensors quickly retarded the tunes advances. Net net no power increase! Power to the rear wheels with/without the tune was ~280rwhp and 290ft/lbs. The tune gave a slight advantage above 6k and did not decrease the air/fuel ratio like the stock tune.

On the positive side, I was VERY impressed with the owners of the dyno at dyno tune motorsports in Columbus, OH. They were able to give very good explanations of the data logging they did with their SCT system. Unfortunately, I could only absorb so much in the 45 minutes I was there.

We talked about what my goals for the car were and what they have seen thats worked. I expressed that I didn't want to have to get into the block or heads until its payed off and for the next 2-3 years I do plan on using it as a daily driver in the summer so I wouldn't be doing anything extreme soon. After that I am considering going more agressive and trying to build the car up for the drag strip. We'll see...

Brian and his dad (owners) talked about possibly raising the air/fuel ratio to ~13.0 and massaging the knock sensors some. They said they have gotten this motor to easily get 300rwhp by doing this. So my plans to keep this a daily driver without sacrificing reliability/driveability include a:

Magnaflow cat-back
Off-road H-pipe (we have no emisions testing here in southern Ohio)
Cold air intake (brand TBD)
Possibly a good set of headers
SCT tune to 13.0 air/fuel and timing increase

I am hoping with these mods I can get ~340rwhp without having to upgrade the cooling system, fuel injectors/delivery system, clutch, transmission and remaining drivetrain.

I've read the stock equipment on this motor should handle ~380-400hp at the motor without to much difficulty. After this all of the above including the rods/pistons would need upgraded (and the fun begins!)

Any suggestions, comments are extremely welcome. I will post the dyno graphs next week.

I am not surprised in the least bit that you didnt get any gains from the tune. The two 01 cobra's and even a mach1 Doug has tried to tune with SCT has had no or very minor power increases. Not enough to say it was the tune. Now on all of these, like yours, didnt have many mods. I think once a CAI, headers and a few more goodies are thrown at it, you'll probably start taking advantage of a tune. Ford tuned those 4v's very agressivly from the factory.

I'd go with a Borla stinger catback instead if I were you, and an offroad X rather than an H. The Stinger's and X pipe combo would sound far better...just an observation. Your car looks bad, that stance is sweet, all it needs now is some nice wide wheels and tires!!!! JLT makes good cold air intakes, you might want to check into them, alot of people have been very happy with the results, also if you plan on drag racing your car you'll need a shorty shifter, I'd look into Pro 5.0 and MGW, people seem to have the best results with them.

Sorry this took so long, been very busy at work.

Here is the dyno chart from my dyno session at Dyno Tune Motorsports in Columbus, OH

The first two runs (red/green) are with the Predator tune. For the third run we reflashed the computer back to stock. As you can see the predator tune gave little if any gains. During the dyno run their data logger showed the timing trying to advance, but the knock sensors kept retarding it back to essentially stock. Also, the tune did not lean the mixture any more than stock except above 6K rpm.

They mentioned I should be able to gain ~10HP by increasing the air/fuel to 13. Has anybody done this to a 4-valve motor? I can lean the mixture out using the predator. Brian at dyno tune showed me how to read the short term fuel values to calculate the air/fuel target the computer is trying to dial-in. Essentially, all you have to do is multiply the short term fuel trim by 14.6 to get the air/fuel ratio the computer is programmed for.
